HSG Procedure

Soooo I had the hsg procedure done today. For almost two weeks I searched online looking for people's advice on how it felt. Some people said it was nothing and others compared it to giving birth.

Well I do know what giving birth feels like but I know that was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.. I even took a prescribed pain killer before and had no blockages (blockages make it more painful)

Just wanted to give you ladies a heads up. If I had to do over I would have for sure asked for something stronger that what I got.

I'm going for my third HSG on Monday.  My first hurt like crazy, I nearly cried having it done.  My second was done after I'd given birth (unmedicated) to my DD, and it didn't hurt at all.  I did take a pain pill before the second one, but don't think I did for the first one.  I'm not sure what my pain level will be for this one, because I've since had surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy and I lost a tube.  I'm hoping that it is as easy as my second one was.

I'm going to be doing my next round of clomid next cycle along with more IUI's.  We were successful with our 4th IUI with clomid (we have MFI) but as I said above, it was ectopic so we lost it.

I have heard (and know a few lucky ones) who have conceived the cycle or or the cycle after the HSG.  It can help clear the way for the sperm.  :)

Good Luck to all!

Thanks for responding. My OB called me on Monday and told me that she wants me to start clomid next cycle. I am bit nervous and excited about it. Nervous because I don't normally like taking medicines. I am a more hollistic (natural) person. Also, I have heard bad side effects that taking clomid cause. Excited because this may be what it takes for my husband and I to conceive. Also, my sister in law used clomid and conceived twins so that makes me hopeful (I would love twins so I think, LOL). So, I am going to take clomid next cycle... I did want to tell you, the doctor that performed my HSG last week said that several women conceive shortly after having their HSG because it cleans and flushes out their system. I so believe this is true because this is the first month that I truly see my cervical mucus. Sorry if this is TMI but today I noticed a very large amount of stretchy discharge. I decided to use an OPK to see if I'm ovulating and it came back positive. My line was darker than the control line. I'm hoping that I don't even need the clomid ; ) Good luck and lots of baby dust.

Yeah I think it affects every women different.. I just could not believe the pain and I tried with all I had to keep myself together but the minute I walked out the front doors I just broke down. For about an hr after I had horrible horrible cramps but a heating pad helped so much! Now I just fell super sore, but ill take this over the pain o had earlier any day! Lol

*swtshae: well I have pcos with insulin resistance. I've been on clomid since September 2011. My hsg came back all normal, husbands sperm check came back all normal (thank god I couldn't handle another problem lol) so she wants to continue me on the clomid cuz it is working, ive ovulated every month but one. But i know i only have a few more trys before i have to get off the clomid. What does ur dr have you doing?

I had one done a week ago tomorrow and I didn't think it was bad at all. I posted last week asking for advice on how they felt and like you I got several different answers. I took a pain pill before and maybe that helped some because the only pain I felt was a cramping when the doctor inserted the ballon. I was so relieved to know that there was NO BLOCKAGE. Congrats to you for no blockage as well. Are you trying to conceive? Where do you go from here? I'm asking because I wonder if it's the same things that I've been recommended to do.

Oh I agree!!  Mine was very painful also.  I had suspected Endometriosis, so BEFORE I had the surgery for this they had me do the HSG.  Well, no one told me to take anything and there I was while they were trying to get this catheter in me, omgosh it hurt so bad, went to inject the dye and the catheter wasn't even in right, the dye came out everywhere!!.  Well back to trying to putting in another one, more painful and then putting the dye in hurt, it made me cramp really bad...they also told me I had cervical stenosis but no blockages thank goodness.  Not sure if the cervical stenosis played a factor but I completely agree....Heads up..it IS SOMETIMES painful!!!

Glad to know you had no blockages! :)
