Hi everyone,

Well I have just started seeing my infertility doctor.  He put me on my first meds.  I have 100 mg. of clomid, a prenatal vitamin and estrogen.  He also scheduled me for my HSG, which I went for this morning.  Some family told me to expect slight cramping, like during a menstrual period but what I experienced was a lot more.  It wasn't unbareable but it did hurt.  My husband actually got weak from seeing me in pain!  AWWWW!  :)  The doctor told me my uterus looks fine and my left tube is completely clear but my right tube is questionable.  Does anyone know if the HSG dye actually push your tubes open or if I will have to have them surgically opened?  I go back to the doctor next Friday (10/24) for another lab test, ultrasound and post coital test.  Good luck to everyone and my husband and I are blowing lots and lots of baby dust your way!

I had a HSG done last November and toward the middle of it I was in so much pain.   I have to get another one done in November and kind of scared.  Has anyone experience pain that felt like a really bad period where you are sweating because the cramps were so bad?  What can it be from.  The dr, just ignored what I felt and said there's nothing wrong with your tubes

I suggest someone going with you.  If your tubes are not blocked than you should only have mild cramping.  One of my tubes are questionable so I had slightly more than mild cramping.  I was glad my husband was there to drive us home.

I am having a HSG Tuesday! I too have a prescription for an antibiotic.  Did you go by yourself? Or, do you suggest someone going with me?

Thank you for all your words of encouragement.  I really hope the "clearing out the cobwebs" is the case.  I have been reading online that a lot of women do get pregnant right after an HSG.

wantingababy: The pain you experienced was most probably from the tube that is "questionable." When the dye does not flow freely through the tube, it can cause pain. Sometimes, the dye can help clear the blockage, though, so hopefully it did that for you!

Even if it did not help clear the tube, it can still have an affect on your fertility by "clearing our the cobwebs," so to speak, from your other tube. Your RE might suggest surgery to remove any blockage still in your "questionable" tube, if any, or he/she might just suggest monitoring and fertility meds to increase your chances of getting a mature egg (or more) on your good side. Lots of women have gotten pregnant with one tube!

maryddn: I had an HSG a while back and it didn't really hurt at all (my tubes were clear, though), so try not to worry too much about the procedure. It's very short anyway, so even if you do experience pain it won't be for very long.

Best of luck to both of you!

I didn't have pain the whole time.  I'm not sure if the pain was from the catheter the doctor inserted or the actual dye flowing through my uterus and tubes.  They gave me doxycycline to take the night before, the morning of and than every 12 hours after, I think I have about 3 pills left to take of that.  I have heard the same thing!   I really hope it's true.  Thank you for everything and good luck to you too!

I don't have any answer for you b/c I haven't yet to have a HSG. I have questions for you thought: did you have pain the whole time and how long was it? Did you take any pain med and/or antibiotic? From what I heard, some people conceive right after this procedure. So good luck to you and hope you get your BFP soon.

I think the dye can open your tubes sometimes. A guy I work with his wife got pregnant after having an HSG done. I'm not sure what they would do though. Good luck to you and DH!
