Has anyone ever been an egg donor? I have questions......

I am 29 years old. Other than being obese, I am in very good health. I have a healthy happy 3 year old daughter and have been trying for 13 months for a second child. My daughter was conceived after 18 months trying on our own, and then I had one a successful IUI and she was finally here. My insurance NO LONGER COVERS anything related to infertility, therefore I do not have coverage for another IUI. I have been told that it would cost a minimum of $1500 out of my pocket to have the IUI done. My husband has a decent job, but I am a stay at home Mom. $1500 is a fortune for us, especially when it may not be successful. While talking to the nurse, she asked if I had ever considered donating my own eggs.....I never gave any thought to it at all. She said I would be highly compensated and that the cost would cover a few IUIs for just one donation. I also could donate up to 6 times if I wanted to. So, my question is, has anyone ever donated? Do you obsess about where your egg has gone? Do you think about the possiblility of having bioligical children out in the world somewhere? I have been seeing this as an opportunity to help others have children, but I'm afraid my own fears might stop me!!! I would love to have another baby so badly. Any suggestions???

I have been an egg donor. I did it to help pay for one of the 5 IVF cycles I had. It covered everything in the cycle except the meds. It was done during my IVF cycle so I didn't have to go through any extra pain because I always had alot of follicles so they took them all at the same time.  Everything is totally anonymous, I will never know who recieved my eggs or if they concieved.  The doctor I was seeing suggested it because of the amount that we had already spent having first a tubal revearsal and 4 IVF cycles, we had already spent over $60,000. We didn't have a problem with it because we knew how bad we wanted a child and if we could help someone else we wanted to. We were never able to concieve with IVF but we did eventually concieve on our own. I have never really even thought about it.  We have two beautiful children now and I hope we were able to help someone else to have a little angel also.

Are you talking live or frozen egg donation.  If fresh it could be timely and usually you have to be under 30. you have to sync up your cycle with someone elses in live donation.  Sound like you're having trouble with getting pregnant yourself.  Why are they asking you to donate?  Also...we've been considering the egg donation ourselves. You get to see what the donor looks like (anonymous)and you the agencies want you to be within a certain BMI (height weight proportionate).  The egg donor gets about 4 to 5K and the agency gets about 3k.  In CA if you're gorgeous and slender you can probably get about 8k.  You have to get the fertility injectibles to make you super ovulate and then they take them out like in IVF.  That's what I know about it.  We've seriously considered as I'll be 41 in june.

A woman I had worked with had done it a few times. It wasnt as easy as you think. Meds, injections, and a rigid time schedule. It wasnt completly painless either.

Yes..she was compensated greatly.

I wouldn't personally do it. I think it would be easier on me to carry a child to term for a couple than use one of my own eggs. But thats just me.

I know, that is a bit high, my friend was told between $500-$700...I would check around. About donating an egg, I know that would be a very great thing to be able to help those who need help, but I don't know if I could do it, I would always wonder where my bio baby was, and how they were, if they were in a good home, everyone walking down the street I would wonder. I already have a problem always thinking that someone looks like so and so...and I know I would always think, OMG, they look like me..wonder if that was my baby. Good luck with your decision, it would be a very nice thing for your to do though :)

I'm really surprised that they say it will cost $1800.  My doctor told me the whole procedure and everything would be under $300!!  Could you try another doctor??
Sorry, I don't know about the egg donation.. :)

Thanks for the comments. I had no idea that an IUI should probably cost less. I will definetly look around. I guess it doesn't matter where I go or who I see since insurance isn't paying for it.  Thanks. I still need to think about the egg donation. It's a bigger decision that I first thought.
