Hi; wondering whether it's absolutely necessary to be on birth control pills before egg retrieval?

Hi; you might have seen my posts elsewhere here, where I asked more general questions. Just consulted with a respected IVF doc yesterday, who said that at my advanced age I didn't have a day to lose, and that I'd have to begin on birth control pills today for egg retrieval in late October. Has anyone had exp. where they haven't had to be on birth control pills before egg retrieval? I just feel like I should be trying naturally every single month. Thanks!
