Hysterosalpingogram-HSG--WHAT????

Hysterosalpingogram-HSG--WHAT????

Can anyone help me?  I'm nervous about this test the doctor wants me to have done. It's called a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG).  Is there any side effects I should know about?  How bad is the procedure?  Can someone help me???

It's a pretty cool test.  You can see the dye going up your tubes on the screen as they are doing the test.  So, you'll know results right away.  For me the test was unpleasant but not painful.  Some ladies on this forum find HSG actually painful, especially if the tube or tubes are blocked.  However, it's better to know if there is a problem.  Also, HSG clears your tubes and makes you more fertile for a few months.

Good luck!!!

it's really not that bad. Just remember to breathe and make sure you don't go on an empty stomach. I did and almost passed out.

It's fine take some Tylenol 30 mins before hand.  I had some cramping the first time, then was told to take some Tylenol the second time and it helped. Good luck!

I dont want to scare you and maybe it was just because my tube was blocked but i had very bad pain during that, they told me to take a tylenol before i came but actually they really should have sedated me, i was in so much pain that 3 nurses had to hold me down so they could see it clearly. I dont regret doing it because it gave them a lot of info but it was very painful i would take at least 4 ibuprofin.

I asked my doc why some women complain of excrutiating pain and for others it is just mild - and he said some places still use metal cathetars to inject the dye, rather than flexible plastic ones.  This can be extremely uncomfortable.  However, I've also heard (like corina said) that is just plain more painful if the tubes are blocked somehow.  But I'm sure yours will be clear and everything will go smoothly - don't worry.

hi there.

I had one done earlier this year and it was very uncomfortable for me rather than painful. i had a blocked tube that i found out from that HSG. The one thing i should mention (TMI sorry) is that your feet are in stirrups and quite high so a little embarassing. Also take painkillers before hand and bring a pad as you leak the dye afterward.

good luck and i am sure you will be fine.
