IUI and open cervix

IUI and open cervix

Hi, I guess I have what is probably a silly question that I'm hoping someone can answer...

I recently started fertility treatment and had an SHG. During the SHG (as I understand it) my cervix was too open and the water was just flowing right back out. They ended up using a larger catheter with a balloon on the end (which really hurt, btw!).

So my question is, if I have IUI, or even just intercourse for that matter, isn't it just going to flow right back out as well?

Thanks in advance

The cervix is usually closed. It opens slightly during fertile window and again during menses. Did the dr indicate why yours was open or was it from dialtion for the HSG? It should have closed back shortly afterward.

Hello!  I agree with what heather said! it does open up during fertile time.. have you ever had children before?     I have had three IUI's and two of them they could barely thread the catheter thru the cervix and the other one it went in super easy since it was open..all of those had used trigger shots, but the first one (where it was closed) i didn't actually ovulate, so maybe thats why it was closed!?!    GOOD LUCK with your IUI's a lot of people get preggo with those! : )

My RE told me the swimmers know where to go and will keep trecking along up the cervical canal to the tubes.  Your cervix should close right afterwards.  I agree with what was stated above.

Good luck!  I got pg on my second IUI and I have a shortened cervix to boot!

Oh good...thank you to everyone..all of your comments makes me feel much better...

Yes, the doctor did say I must be within a couple of days of my ovulation and that was why it was open.

I guess I was just concerned that there was some medical condition where it wouldn't close...or was too open..and that next month when we go for our IUI that the same thing would happen and it would just leak right out!

My RE has said the same... once you surpass the cervix and drop the little guys off in the uterus they just have to swim left or right into your tube....  You shouldn't have to worry.
Have you had any procedures done on your cervix that would cause it to be more open?  If so, then all that means is you will have to most likely be stitched up a bit at the end of your 2nd trimester when you get prego.
