Irregular period when to test

I had a baby over 14 months ago and have never started birth control, because we had some trouble concieving our first.  We have not gotten pregnant yet and I am starting to get worried.  I am still breast feeding my first son, in the evenings and morning and hope that is not why I am having problems getting pregnant. My cycles were about every 29 days and the last two months become very irregular with spotting between my periods.  My question is could all this spotting and irregularities make it hard for me to get pregnant?  Also, when should I start ovulation testing?--I have been spotting up to a week before what I consider normal period bleeding.

Yes--unforunately not positive---instead my period came today--4 days early!!
