Low Sperm Count

Low Sperm Count

Hi All,

Has anyone had a low sperm count and then taken all the suggested supplements such as zinc, macca etc and then got a normal sperm count?  DP found out he had a low count 2 months ago and since has been taken all the supplements that were suggested and has another test in a month! Im curious to know what the likely chances are of it been better or the same so i can prepare myself!!!

Look forward to hearing your stories!

Hi, I just wanted to give you some hope, we found out last year that my DP had a very low count less that 25mil and we tried supplements, zinc and folic acid... there wasn't much improvement in his count at the 2 following 3 monthly checks and our GP suggested we try IUI as after 4.5 years of TTC unsucessfully we were told it would be unlikley we would conceive naturally.

Sadly for us IUI was not financially viable so we kept to TTC naturally using OPK's and a ClearBlue Fertility monitor and to improve our odds and we refrained from having sex for at least 5 clear days prior to ovualtion. Against all the odds I fell pregnat and am now 16 weeks along with a healthy baby.

Keep positive.... keep believing... it will happen :)  SSBD to you

Hi there,

Thank-you sooo much for your reply its really uplifting to hear that.  No-one ever puts the end results on hear, they just say the have a low count and nothing else.  I think i know that we arnt going to see any improvement in December at the next test cos otherwise i would have fallen pregnant in the meantime right! I think my DP is thinking that their will be an improvement which will make it all the harder if there isnt because he will be so upset. Im absolutely dreading it especially with it been so close to Christmas too!  I think we will end up going down the IVF route, according to our doctor if we do we may get it on the NHS, fingers crossed! Even if we dont and we have to pay i dont think i could even if we had all the money in the world, it feels like your buying your own child when you have to pay which just doesnt sit with me!!!

Thanks again for your positive post, really appreciate that!  Do you mind me asking how low your partners count was?  I wish you all the very best of luck with your pregnancy xxx

You are welcome, just don't give up on your dream... it only takes ONE determined swimmer :)

I can't remember the exact figures but I know we had a low count on all 3 factors, motility, volume and morphology... the dr said anything under 30mil is considered low. We did 3 lots of tests over 9 months and the first 2 tests came back at 20mil and the highest was 25mil. We didn't quality for help on the NHS as we already had a child together and although I was under 39 when we first started the testing process I wasn't once the tests were complete!!. I got prices from a private fertility clinic but they were SO overpriced that it really wasn't an option. If you can push for it try IUI on the NHS, I know some health authorities will give you 6 attempts (with or without clomid... its worth a try before embarking on IVF.

There is nothing wrong with taking supplements.. I think any help is better than none! Of course if you can get your partner as fertility fit as possible that helps too... no alcohol (it makes the sperm sleepy) no smoking, no hot baths, loose boxer shorts, no sunbeds and lots of fruit and veg, I also heard orange juice helps (without the vodka!!) and trying to abstain until O day really can affect the quality and quantity you need for baby making.

Thanks for your well wishes, I am still in disbelief that I am actually pregnant and thank god every day for my little miracle. Take care and keep in touch, I am sending you positive thoughts for a positive outcome. xx
