Message to women considering D and C

For all the ladies considering a D and C after thier miscarriage please take a moment or more to think about the possible consequences of it. D and C are done all the time, but for some women, or for some doctors doing them, the removal ot fetal tissue from the uters can result in the causing of scar tissue. This is done if the removal is aggressive that instead of taking away fetal tissue, the endometrium and probably even the layer below it is removed. THIS DOES NOT GROW BACK.   The result is very little flow or no flow at all. There is no endometrium so nother sheds every month. The body forms scar tissue. Cases of this range from ones that can be cured with laparoscopy. The goal is to cut through the scar tissue, then gives the women estrogen to help her grow endomentrium over the bold areas.  Mind you if the surgeon uses a heat source to remove the scar tissue this can cuase more harm and more scar tissue to return.
I say this because i have scar tissue in the uterus. It was caused by a myomectomy to remove fibroids. I did not really need to remove them but i thought it would make my second prgnnacy more successful than the first. What it caused was secondary infertiltiy. My uterus has veyr little endometrium left. Both tubes are shut with scar tissue. Basically i only have functioning ovaries. My only way to have a second baby is to do surogacy.
I want to make my condition useful for others. No woman shouwld go through that kind of uneeded pain.
If you have  amiscarriage, let your body deal with it the way it should. I know you want to get this over with as soon as you can. The body knows what to do more than a doctor does. It will remove the products naturally when hormones go down.

For more information check the Asherman's website. www.ashermans.org
"If i knew all that could happen becasue of the myomectomy i would have interviewed more doctors and made sure i know how they will do the procedure and that no heat source was used to remove the fibroids."

Kricket- i would keep your scheduled procedure.  We all takes risks with anything we do, even having our wisdom teeth removed.  I had 2 MC's and both needed d and c's because my body did not naturally expel.  I could not walk around for up to a month knowing my baby had passed away and was still inside me.  It is traumatizing.  I did not have any trouble getting pregnant after my d and c's and i had 2 in 5 months unfortunately.  But then after that we got pregnant with our son and he is now almost 11 months old and is happy and healthy.  The scar tissue that can be caused by a d and c can always be removed.

What i tell people is you have to decide for yourself if the benefits outweigh the risks and only YOU can decide that.

rkamhawi- i am sorry you had a bad experience but unfortunately you can not shy someone away from a procedure that actually helps others conceive.  I am truly sorry again that your experience was bad.

RKAHMHAWI- -- I am sorry you ahve had such a bad experience but wish you lots of luck in the future with having a baby no matter how it gets here.

I will have my D&C on wed & let you know how it goes.

This sure is a mystery. I am so glad however it is not Ashermans.
I do hope things work out for you. So you can just keep ttc.
This is not my area of research but were you given any reason why you keep miscarrying? Did you check that with an RE? Did you examine the fetus to see if there genetic problems?

I got my period 30 days (which is 2-4 days later than normal for me) after my DnC Feb. 6th 2009.  I have a regular "normal" 3 days medium flow w/1-2 days of spotting every month 26-28 days apart.
Yes, my HSG was painless, quick & showed no issues, & the other test is even more accurate for the uterus, it's only looking @ the uterus very magnified, & the RE himself did this one, he said "perfect".
So, I know I don't have Ashermans, but I think its quite odd that I've not been able to conceive since my DnC.  I got pg in August of 2008, MC'd @ 7 weeks, (B.O.) then lap in Nov. pg in December of 2008, MC'd in Feb.2009 & now very VERY uneventful;(

I feel that even though we/they know so much about fertility, they don't know it all.  & I DO feel that there is/was some sot of correlation w/my DnC & me NOT being able to conceive again.........so far.

Keep us posted on your surrogate;)

Hi Laura,
The lack of periods, or weak flow is a symptom of Ashermans. The best test to do for Ahserman is an HSG. If you have done that and your uterus is fine, and the dye flows all the way and out fo the tubes  then you do not have scarring.
I hope everything works out for  you.
Didn't the doctor tell you it will be a few weeks before you get your period backa nd can conceive again?

Well, I don't seem to have any "issues" other than "my age" (whatever!!!) BUT, I STRONGLY feel that the DnC that i was REALLY encouraged to have last February has something to do w/the fact that I have not been able to conceive since then;(

I have ALWAYS prior to this DnC been able to get pg RIGHT away;) 4 out of 6 pg's were first time tries, one took on the 3rd try & one we were not trying.  Then I had a DnC, & it has ALL changed;(
I've had an HSG done recently & that other test where they put saline in the uterus & do a vaginal US to look really closely at the uterus, & everything looks perfect.  I do only have one ovary/tube, last year in Nov. I had lap done, to remove a HUGE cyst that took over my life for a while, but the stuff I DO have, looks great.

ANYWAY, I can't "prove" anything but I was just sick about having to get the DnC, I was 11 weeks pg & my baby died between 9-10 weeks;( & NOTHING was happening.  This was my 3rd MC, the other 2 were natural, between 6-7 weeks.

I have normal periods & all that, so it does seem that all is well, but I just find it VERY VERY odd that I have not conceived since, we've done Gonal-F 2x's once w/an IUI, & clomid once + we ttc 4x's on our own, & I DO O every month, so it's strange, for me.  I think, that it can't be just my "age" cuz NOT that I want another MC, but I just think that maybe by now, I would have at least gotten pg once or twice  & have MC'd or better yet, have a baby ;o)

IDK...............
Best of luck to you;)  & thanks for sharing your experience & knowledge;)

Dear Donna,
First of all i am very sorry for your loss. Many of us were reading your posts and getting excited by your excitement. I did not get Asherman from a D and C, although most women with Ashermans got it by having a D and C. I did a myomectomy to remove fibroids. A year before that i had no fertility issues and delivered my girl at the age of 33. After the myomectomy i never got a period. The doctor who tried to investigate the cause of ammenorrehea (wrong spelling) said i have severe scarring in teh uterus and can never carry again. I learnt that most women who develop scarring in teh uterus get it through D and C. I do not want to scare you at all. If i have i am very sorry. I just want to reduce the number of women who have to endure inferitlity due to scarring in teh uterus. It is true many women have D and C and nothing happens to them. A few others happen to develop scarring becasue of hwo the procedure was done.

With time on this site i have developed an interest and then a care for manyof the women posting here. I hope you all get your dreams for a baby.
I am here because we did IVF on DEcember 3rd too. I have a gestational surrogate.  So far things seem to be ok.
