Natural Cycle - are my follies measuring normal?

Natural Cycle - are my follies measuring normal?

Hello ladies,

I'm wondering if any of you have undergone cycle monitoring (trans. ultrasound with bloodwork to determine ovulation) and if you know at what measurement a follicle is considered mature and ready to drop its egg?

I went yesterday for cycle monitoring on CD11. This is a natural cycle but Dr. will put me on progesterone once I ovulate. At CD11, one folly measured 18mm and he saw a second one that measures either 11mm or 13mm or 15mm (I couldn't read the Dr's notes clearly enough.)   Are they measuring normally?  Is it normal to have 2 follies developing or should there be a lot more?  Does 2 follies mean two eggs?  (Fraternal twins do run on both sides of my family).

My FSH is elevated this month so he doesn't think I will conceive:(  But I have to remain hopeful.

Thank you,
M

Hi Miranda!

A follicle is generally considered mature once it hits 18 mm...but it can still grow a couple more days before it's ready to ovulate. You'll probably ovulate within the next few days, though. It is not common to have more than one mature follicle in a natural cycle...so the smaller follicle probably won't continue developing...but if it does, then yeah, you would have a chance at twins. How high was your FSH?

Hi Miranda.

I had a vag U/S yesterday at CD13 and the doc told me that each ovary had one dominant follicle that measured 17mm.  He told me that it would take probably 2 more days for them to mature.  Last time I had a vag U/S the follicle measured 20, and I O'd later on that day (funny - once i knew it was there, I could TOTALLY feel it.)  So it does appear like your egg is ready to go!

I could see the U/S screen and noted that there were actually a number of follicles on each ovary  - kindof big looking ones actually.  He said that the smaller ones dont count - that an ovary will eventually select and release only one egg and the smaller follicles will just die off.

Fingers crossed for you - to heck with what your doc says.  He isnt GOD!
