PCOS and inducing periods

PCOS and inducing periods

I have PCOS and I am trying to get pregnant. I have been prescribed Clomid and am waiting to take them when I have my next period. So far I've been waiting for the opportunity since November. I recently experienced all the symptoms of my  period except the actual period. Lots of people haev recommended Provera and Metformin but is it possible just to start taking one or other of these or will I have to wait until I next experience the symptoms? I am seeing the doctor in the morning but I want to go armed with as much positive info as I can. This is really beginning to get me down as it feels like I've been waiting forever.

My doc put me on Provera to induce a period. I just started mine last monday and I started bleeding yesterday. It worked for me before I even finished taking the 10-day dosing. I just had a bad experience taking Metformin so I can't really recommend that but lots of ladies here have had great experiences with the Metformin.

Good luck!

I never knew that metformin was given to help get pregnant? Im on metformin for PCOS and it also helped me lose 40lbs. My doctor stated to me that it helps to get pregnant while taking this, but most women who have PCOS are on this drug to help with weight issues and insulin issues and also on bc pills to regulate a period (like me). TO me if your not having a period on your own, then you need Provera (i was on that to help stop my bleeding back in '07 when i ended up in the hosiptal, but didn't work) Provera to jump start a period and then Clomid (not sure which cycle days to start that) to help with fertility. Im not sure why everybody seems to think metformin helps to get pregnant, seeing that metformin is generaly for diabietes. I could be wrong with that but, that is mostly what my doctor has told me. That taking metformin (if overweight with pcos) will help you lose weight (if on diet), and therefore your cycles should become normal after about 5 or 10% weight loss with increasing the chances of natural ovulation....BUT it's not just the drug helping you.

Good luck with everything. Remember, if you dont get a period naturaly then you need Provera to jump start in order to take Clomid. But if you have pcos then yes your doctor may want you to be on metformin as well (just for the symptoms of pcos).

ooops. in that line "My doctor stated to me that it helps to get pregnant while..." I meant to say he never stated to me. Sorry

I went to the doctors today and she was decidedly unhelpful. She would not prescribe me anything in case it interferred with the things the infertility clinic I'm under at the hospital wants to do. The trouble with that is the things the clinic have arranged all hinge on me actually having a period. The odds for that are very slim considering that since Sept 2007 I have had the sum total of 4 periods. She is meant to be phoning the clinic and then phoning me back. So far no joy. I am really beginning to despair and I don't know what the next step is. I really need to get into some sort of cycle but I fear that I'm never going to be able to do so on my own. Anyone else had a similar experience?

I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago and never had any periods.  I think that you should go to a reproductive endocronologist.  When I was going to a OBGYN they were not monitoring me or anything.  The doctor just told me to take clomid but that didn't work for me.  I was also perscribed Provera with clomid so that shouldn't interfere with that.  If you need to get your period maybe you should contact the clinic you are at and maybe they will give it to you.  My RE gave me provera when I first went to him to induce a period.
