Prolactinoma, Breastfeeding, Pregnancy

Hi all,

I am 38 years old.  I have a 6 mo old baby.  I got pregnant with her while on bromocriptinee to supress high prolactin levels coming from pituitary adenoma.

I am breastfeeding my baby.

Yesterday my endo asked me to consider stopping breastfeeding due to the risk that prolonged elevated prolactin might result in growth of the prolactinoma.  I told him I believe breastfeeding better for me and baby and I am prepared to take that risk.

Ok, what do you all think about that. Any idea how real this risk is?

Second Q is that I would really like to have another child.  My period just came back.  I don't know what my prolactin levels currently are.  Would this likely be possible to get pregnant again?

thanks

Hi Sally! I think your best bet is to start having your levels checked again once you're done breastfeeding (whether you stop now or later) and then start trying for a second child once the levels are back to normal.

As for the breastfeeding/prolactin risk, I'm really not sure. I'm pregnant with my first, so I don't really have any experience with that yet. You might be able to get some more feedback on that on the Maternal and Child Forum:

Best of luck with everything!

Well I got pregnant each time breastfeeding. I do ot know about the prolactinlevels, never ahd them checked. All my babies were early due to other things but I kept on nursing. I tandamed nursed after the baby was born and got pregnant again. My second baby nursed till she was two and the third was 17 months and I still was nursing wen I had #4 but she was born to early and prematurly so I never did nurse three at a time. What does the elevated prolactin do to you? I guess from your post it is not good.

I say nurse! It is best for you and he baby! Deal with the rest when she is done.
