Questions about first IUI

Hi All!  My DH and I have been ttc for over 2 years.  I have taken clomid for 6 cycles and no luck.  I had an HSG test done and they said left tube is blocked.  Anyways, after receiving the results gyn told me to go to an RE.  We had our consultation on Tuesday.  It happend to be day one of AF.  My doctor wants to do IUI this cycle with femara.  I go back on Jan 12 for U/S.  My question is would you get your trigger shot on the day of the u/s if there are good follies or is it common to have multiple U/S's if the follies aren't ready?  And then when do you go back for the procedure?  I have read a lot of people go back within 36 hours.  We live over an hour from the RE.  Has anyone been in this situation?  Can you get the u/s at another hospital or have the procedure done somewhere else?  I am so confused and just want this process to work!  Thanks so much for any advice!

Jen

Hi-- my follies & hormone levels on Femara weren't ready until day 18 so I had several u/s and blood draws the week of O.  I had 2 IUIs back to back with each cycle except the cycle we got the BFP on... that one, we only had one IUI right after O.

I didn't do the trigger shot when I was on clomid or femara since my hormone levels were rising normally.  This just means more u/s and blood draws to monitor when the natural surge takes place.  I did have the trigger for my follistim cycle and was surprised how much it did not hurt!

I also want to mention that although the IUI is essentially the same process as the HSG it doesn't hurt...since your cervix is already open at the time of O, the catheter goes in easily and the amount of liquid is nothing compared to the HSG dye so don't sweat that part.  The only annoying thing is that it takes 2 hrs for them to process the swimmers so plan on being late to work that day!

Good luck!

I had my first IUI on Dec. 17th my RE is 3 hrs from where i live. I personally had to go back and forth several times. It all depends how fast your follicles develop.

GL with your IUI :) I did 2 IUIs. I didn't take Famara I took CLomid, but I heard Femara is better. With my IUIs had the Follie scan and if my follicles were the right size I got the trigger shot at that appointment and then I had my fist IUI at 24 hrs after trigger and my second one at 48 hrs. We have male infertility so my RE recommends 2 IUIs to get as many "boys" as we can. GL :)

Hi J,

I've done femara + trigger shot for two cycles, along with timed intercourse. Unfortunately it didn't work.
They take my blood on day 3 of my cycle and an ultrasound. They continue to take your blood and u/s until your follies are matured.
Once they are matured, then they give you the trigger shot (this could be the same day or the next day).
After the trigger, they do the IUI...I am on the third cycle of Femara, trigger shot and back to back IUI - which I had done within 24 hours and then 36 hours. My doc likes to do two rounds of iui back to back for more success.

I hope this helps.
I find out tomorrow if I am preggers...nervous as hell :-(

I had multiple u/s before the trigger.  Everything depends on how your body reacts to the stims (Femara in your case), i.e. how many follies are developing and how fast they are growing.  Typically IUI is scheduled 36 hours after the trigger unless you do 2 IUIs back to back.

Good luck!!
