Recently diagnosed with PCOS

Hello, I am 24 and was recently diagnosed with PCOS. I am looking for another Ob/Gyn to get a second opinion. My current Dr, seems a bit scattered and no longer follows up with the details.

I am looking for someone who can help a point my fiancee and I in the right direction. I was on birth control for many years because my period was irregular. Now I have been off Birth control for 2 months, still no period. Not too mention, I have gained so much over the past year, which after reading up online is one of the symptoms.

This all very new to me and I am so worried I will not be able to have kids. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

I don't live there but when you do find a new doctor you might want them to test your for insulin resitance, I have that with my pcos and i gained alot of weight in the last 3 years which is related to that, my ovgyn put me on metformin and a low carb diet and told me to eliminate all carbs like white breads and pastas.

I live in NYC, and I have a pretty good doctor I see. Where are you located in NYC? I'm in Queens. I too have PCOS, was put on bc pills close to 2 years ago. You most likely need to start metformin, but before that you will need to what your sugar levels are. I am not insulin resistance (just borderline), however metformin works for both non and insulin resistance. I have been taking it every day since 9/14 and started on twice a day back in Jan 09. It seems to be working. So far I'm down close to 50lbs, and I'm at my all time low weight. I'm not on any special diet, just my own thing (but still eat when I go out). You don't have to reduce all carb intake. If you like pasta and bread like me, eat the whole wheat kind instead. You don't have to go low carb, if you can follow your regular diet by just cutting excess sugar, fats and calories. If you want my doctor info send me a message and I could help you out.

Also my period is ten times better. Last month I had no cramps and pretty much just 3 days of spotting (which is nothing compared to when I was sick, I use to get it for 2 weeks)

I was told I have pcos too becuase I would not get a period. I was regular on birth control but wouldn't get a period off birth control. All my bloodtests for testosterone and insulin resistance were negative, but they did see a cyst like pattern in my ovaries on ultrasound. I was started on Metformin right before I started my IVF cycle to get pregnant. I am now 18weeks pregnant. Don;t worry about not being able to get pregnant if you have pcos. You mat just need a little help with meds to make you ovualte.

A great book if you just got diagnosed is The Ultimate PCOS Handbook (Lose Weight, Boost Fertility, Clear Skin and Restore Self-Esteem) by Colette Harris and Theresa Cheung

It has TONS of helpful info - everything from explaining what causes PCOS in easy terms to understand, to ways you can help it - from prescriptions to herbs/vitamins to diet.  When I googled it, I actually found a scanned version that you can read online!   You can check it out - the link is very long but here it is:

http://books.google.com/books?id=MKzjyQ3RS3MC&dq=colette+harris+teresa+pcos&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=Dv4RrIBVC5&sig=Dwu5LUnLgsDwnNZ5d3OKbwuZk6Y&hl=en&ei=gou2SYP4N5f4MISa1eEK&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPP1,M1

Good luck to you and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to send me a message!

Thanks msniki412, I live in Valley Stream used to live in Queens. It is so hard to find a good Dr. Once I find one, I have them check my sugar.

Would you reccommend your DR?
