Small Gestational Sac for gestational age

Small Gestational Sac for gestational age

I just had my first ultrasound on Friday October 20th.  I should have been in my 9th week of pregnancy, but the doctor said the size of the baby indicated that it was only 6w5d gestational age. The Crown to Rump length was only 0.87 cm.  She also stated that the gestational sac was "too small", but there was a heart beat at 140 BPM. She also pointed out that I have a cyst on my left ovary and that could be causing some cramping.  She scheduled another ultrasound for the following week.  In the meantime on Monday 10/23, I started spotting, so I immediatly called the doctor, who had me come in and have another ultrasound.  At that time he told me I was having a "threatened abortion" and did a vaginal ultrasound and determined that the sac remained too small, but the heart beat was 163 BPM.  He said to make sure that I still went had another ultrasound on Thursday 10/26, which I did.  On 10/26 the tech stated the sac was still too small, but the baby had grown and was now 1.27 CM, 7W4D, with a heart beat of 158 BPM.  The spotting has continued, but the doctor stated that unless the bleeding got worse, not to bother calling them.  I have another ultrasound scheduled for Wed. 11/1/06.  I just read that the gestational sac should be a minimum of 5mm larger than the Crown to Rump Length.  The doctor told that this could still go either way and they are just going to continue to monitor the baby each week.  Has anyone been through this?  Should I be requesting regular blood test to monitor my HcG levels and Progesterone Levels?  Any advise or hopeful stories would be very helpful.

I don't know what to tell you, but I want you to know I'm thinking of you.  I sure hope that all goes well.  I've heard lots of stories about people waiting it out, so I suppose that's all you can do.  I know, you've done enough waiting to prob get pg and now you have to anxiously wait again?  Just take it easy and don't do anything too strenuous, and I wish you the best.  Let us know what you find out!

Hi Kristna--

I don't have a helpful story other than I have just heard many women on here who have had spotted during pregnancy and everything is fine.  I've also heard some women say their fetus was supposedly small, but caught up later on and everything was fine.

I'd say if you have had 3 ultrasounds and the heartbeat is always beating AND it made growth from one US to the next....that's GREAT NEWS!

I would ask them to check your progesterone levels though....it wouldn't hurt to check it.

Also, don't over exurt yourself....take it easy.

I had a miscarriage earlier this year, so I'd love to see an U/S with a heartbeat sometime.

I am thinking of you and I too am going for my 9w5d u/s on wednesday.  My gyn told me last visit as I am at risk for a mc due to already having one that if you see a hb then that is half the battle, he wont take my hcg as he has seen the baby and the hb and there has been growth in the baby....I hear what you are saying about the small g sac and my heart goes out to you but I am not sure whether the hcg would give a true indication if the baby is still continuing to grow? Regardless of what your doc said, if you think you need him no matter how trival it maybe to him, you call on him....you are the one going thru this not him so you get watever reasurance you need!  A very strong plead I make to you for your unborn is to REST....put your feet up until at least the bleeding has finished completely, rest is the best!  Good luck and keep us posted ~~hugs~~

A pregnancy that shows a heartbeat has more than a 95% rate of being a live birth.  Hang in there, your baby has a strong heartbeat. I had trouble with bleeding during my 1st trimester, but always a good strong heartbeat.  My doctor told me I had a fighter in me.  My daughter will be 3 in two days....She is beautiful, healthy, and happy.  Hang in there.

As of Nov 17, 2006, I also have been told that my gestational sac is smaller than it should be for the age of the embryo (8weeks).  My OBGYN had "never" seen a small gestatioal sac and no other problems, in that, the heart rate was 176 and the embryo appeared on ultrasound to be developing normally and measured age appropriate.  I have looked HIGH and LOW on the internet and I have came across nothing to help reassure me or to prepare me otherwise what this outcome may be.  So, it seems several of us are in the same situation.  I have another ultrasound on Dec 1st and I am praying for a favorable outcome!

I had a miscarriage less than 2 weeks of being told my gestatioal sac was small for my babies gestational age.  I hope this post finds all else who may be in a similar position with a better outcome.

I just had an ultrasound on Tuesday,Jan 22nd.  I am currently 7 weeks 2 days along but the fetal pole measures 6w2d.  Beyond that the gestational sac was measuring small as well.  The Doctor told me to be guarded in my optimism.  I am scheduled for a follow up ultrasound on Feb. 5th.  If anyone has any info. to share with me on this I would be so grateful!  This is going to be a long two weeks.

Thank you for coming back and following up with the result after your miscarriage.  I am sorry to hear about your loss.  I know it must be hard to take the time to respond to the thread.  At the same time it is so appreciated.  It is hard to be at home reading about a situation similar to your own and then never get the outcome of what happened.  I, myself, had a gestational sac that measured too small for my dates.  The baby measured correctly but the sac was so small.  I couldn't imagine how it could move.  At any rate, we lost the baby at 19 weeks, so there must have been some other problem as well.
