Test for blood clotting

Hi everyone,

My second in vitro try just ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. I am British, who is now living in Vienna, and did my in vitro here in Vienna.  I was however in London for the last u/s which determined that my baby stopped growing at 6 months.  THe technicial asked me whether I had a test to see if my blood is too thick, which I didn't know.  She said they must have, if I had done in vitro, but I am now worried that it might not have been done.  (Things are somewhat different here: e.g. doctors insisit that you don't see heartbeat until 8 weeks!)

Could anyone tell me what such test is called?
Also, is this a common condition?  I hear taking baby aspirin takes care of this problem.  Is this something routinely recommended by in vitro clinics / doctors in other country?  Thanks a lot.

Factor V is another blood clotting disorder. I have heterozygot (one gene, not two) Factor V and have had two miscarriages.

I believe there is a standard group of test they will run if a blood clotting disorder is suspected. If I were you, I would ask if your doctor (or a new doctor) if they can run one of these blood panels for you.

Good luck!

I have a clotting disorder.   It is called protein s deficiency.   It can cause miscarriage in pregnancy.  My blood clots too much and I can get a blood clot in the placenta.   I was on Heparin for both pregnancies.

There are other clottng disorders that can also cause problems.   MTHFR and protein C are two of them.

Yes it does help.  Thank you.  I just saw my doctor who dismissed the whole idea as unnecessary and unlikely.  I think it is time to find a new clinic...

I really don't know how much I can really help you.But heres my story. I had my IVF cycle in May and am now 7 weeks preg with twins. As far as I know they did not  check if I have a blood clotting disorder or if my blood is too thick etc but since the day of my ET ,I have been on 20 mg of Heparin(inj) which is a blood thinner. I know that everyone who undergoes IVF at my doc's place are prescribed that dosage after IVF and I guess they do it as a precaution...
