The first day of bright red flow is cycle day 1.  If your AF comes again in 28 days from CD1, then you have a 28 day cycle and are most likely fertile around CD14.  14 days from the first day of your last period.

So if your period starts on November 16th, you would want to start having sex around November 26th.  10 days after the start of your period.  It makes no differance how long your period lasts when calculating the days.

This is the fertility cycle in it's absolute most simplest terms.  It does get more complex then this, but as I said you can find out any answer that you are looking for in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.

I hope this helps.  If you use the O Tracker here on MH it may make better sense.  Feel free to look at mine or some of the other girls.  (only this particular cycle is a really BAD example as I am suffering side effects from fertility medication).

It's extremly unlikely that you would ovulate the day before your period (although stranger things have happened).

Typically, an "average" woman with a 28 day cycle will ovulate around day 14.  So you would want to start having sex around day 10 and keep going a couple of days after day 14.   Now if you are not the "average" woman, finding your O date can be a bit more tricky, but in the simplest terms you would take your average cycle length and subtract 14 from it and that is aproximately when you O.

There are other methods for tracking ovulation, such as using Ovulation Prediction Kits (OPK's), charting your basal body temperature (BBT) or monitoring your cervical fluid.  All of these methods are outlined in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It's a fantastic read and I would recommend it to anybody who is trying to get preggers.
