Trying to Conceive

"Hello World"

I am writing in for my wife as she sits with me hoping to hear something good. If the story is too long, move to the last three paragraphs. We got married on January 2007. Before our marriage, my wife had Laparoscopy for a cyst on her right ovary ( 29th April 2004) Finding after the operation were normal. Before this operation, her periods were irregular and after the operation her periods were regular for six months. Even till date, her period dates are irregular. Since the day we got married, my wife wanted to have kids and to support her – I did what ever it took. We went to all the doctors that we could find as a serious of phenomenal issues raised up during this period.

Due to irregular periods – we went to an ultrasound clinic to get an ultrasound to see if everything was normal: The Ultrasound revealed that Both ovaries were enlarged and they showed multiple small cysts of almost same size (5-6 mm) at their periphery. Left Ovary (11.3 ml in vol) || Right Ovary (11.3 ml in vol). There was significant amount of fluid in pouch of Douglas. We rushed to the gyne who operated her back in 2004: she told us that it was normal.

After 5 months, we visit a gynecologist (June 2007) because my wife was thinking that there is surely a problem with her– an ultrasound reveled to the doctor that her egg was prepared for ovulation and uterus was also well prepared. She asked her to go back home and have sex : -)
We again visited her in July, and she gave her the same answer.

In August, we visited her again and she gave her Clomid (Clomiphene), to eat after her next periods, so on the 29th of July she had her periods and we visited the doctor on  08.08.2007 as her 11th day of periods(advised by the doctor). The doctor said that she would conceive, but we were unable to conceive, so we repeated the Clomit medication cycle again as advised by the doctor. The doctor believed that irregular period was not a problem (It is normal for her)

She had her Next periods on 20th of September (Period cycle of 64 Days) – Taking clomid this time created a problem. On October the 14th we had to rush her to the hospital (As a small burse below her belly button appeared up with a severe pain). Unexpectedly, our gynecologist never told us about this. The situation was controlled luckily we visited the doctor after a week and she told it was hyperstimulation cause of clomid which was controlled.

After that I somehow managed to stop ourselves going to the doctor (for a few months). On 6th January 2008, I had my semen analysis, thinking it might be something wrong with me. The test results were normal except for the liquefaction time (1 hour 30 min). Note, the fist shot of my semen dropped outside the specimen collection bottle.

On 4th of February 2008, my wife had her periods, and we again visited another famous gynecologist, after doing her ultrasound, she told us that my wife has PCOs cause of abit large size ovaries. But her Hormones level came in normal (Blood Test Hormones). The doctor again told us that everything is normal – and my wife would conceive in the next 2 to 3 months. The doctor gave her dydrogesterone to eat as my wife wanted to have periods after 30 days .
Her last period was on 5th of March, which lasted for 2 to 3 days with brownish clotting (not fresh blood as she had normal flow of periods before that_. A day later she was testive positive twice in the pregnancy tester strip (HCG Tester Kit). Blood test the next day gave a negative result. My wife was heart broke and cried all week long. All pregnancy strips showed negative that day. And then yesterday Night (March 16 2008) she had some spotting after we had sex with some pain and it was red to pinkish in color and had a pinkish discharge on tissue paper when she wiped and it last for a day only and it was her 13th day of her periods.

We are very tensed if it is normal at all? My wife is very depressed and needs help. We have been searching the internet for two days now. If anyone of you can advise something to us that may help my wife relax. Why are her periods irregular – should we seek medical advice?

My Wife is not over weight. She is slim.

I have PCOS and my doctor put me on metformin (which is a diabetic medicine) and it helped with my periods. I actually got pregnant the first month of taking it, but it ended in a miscarriage. Before starting the met I was lucky to have a period once every 3 months. So I can say that the met has helped get me some what regular. I hope you find the answers that you are looking for and good luck...

As mommyof3andhopefully4 has said, if you are not seeing an RE, you need to. They deal mainly with fertilty issues and do procedures and prescribe meds that an OB-GYN can't. Hope you find some answers soon.

I have had irregular periods my whole life and I was wondering if anything had been said to you about a possibility of it being endometreosis...I have this and two of my aunts have it. All of the issues that you have mentioned I have problems with. I am also having problems getting pregnant, but I along with my 2 aunts have had kids so even if this is the problem it is still very possible to concive. I would talk to your doctor about this and also look into Vitex(chasteberry) it helps regulate your period and increase fertility by balancing your horimones. And this could be just an unbalace in hormones.
Best of Luck to both of you!

My goodness!  I'm so sorry that you guys are going through this, but as you will find on this forum, there are a TON of couples in the same shoes.  You will get all the answers and advice you need here on this website.

Yes, irregular periods can definitley be the cause of infertility.  I know that Clomid is one of the first things your doctor usually tries.  Since your wife didn't have good luck with that, obviously it is time to try something else.  Has she had an HSG done?  That is a dye test that checks to see if there are any blocked tubes or anything abnormal with the uterus.  It checks for fibroids and cysts.  That is usually one of the first things they do.  Another big question....are you seeing regular OB-GYN's?  Or are you going to a Reproductive Endocrynologist?  RE's are ob-gyn's, but they specialize in fertility ONLY.  I know some OB-GYN's claim to help with fertility in their ads, but they aren't specialists.  When we started having issues I skipped straight to an RE.  It saves a ton of time.  Mine is very proactive and once my DH (dear hubby) was tested for testosterone and seman analysis and it came back completely normal...they did an HSG on me (came back normal) and blood work.  Everything is normal for me....28 day's on the nose for my cycle every month and clear blood work.  So they put me on Clomid (this is my second month) and a trigger shot tonight.  I am getting IUI on monday morning.  They did the same thing last month except we didn't do IUI, we did timed intercourse.  So they wanted to give us the shot first and if that didn't work then we would go to the IUI...so that is why we are where we are.  So in saying that, you two just go to an RE and get the answers you need....it sounds like they haven't been proactive enough!   Most of the inital tests and visits are covered by insurance.  If you don't have fertility insurance coverage, normal health insurance covers certain tests done by the RE, but for instance IUI is $300.  It just seems like you have been trying for so long something should have been done.  I would definitley find a doctor that comes up with some sort of "treatment plan".

I hope I helped you some.  I don't have much experience with irregular periods...I am really anxious to read what the other smart and experienced ladies say to you about this subject.  I am thinking they will say the same thing...SEE AN RE!  But they will have a TON more advice and insight on the issues your wife is having.  Trust me, someone on here is going through the exact same thing!  Good luck and let me know if you have any questions...I will check back in!
