What side effects can I experience from Bromacriptine

What side effects can I experience from Bromacriptine

I have been diagnosed with a high prolactin count, no pituarity tumor.  Irregular periods and not ovulating.  Have been trying to get pregnant for the past 18 months with no success.

My specialist has put me on Bromacriptine.  What are the side effects of this medication?  If I do manage to get pregnant, will this harm the child?  will I need to be on this forever?  My prolactin count was at 1300.

Thanks so much

Your count is really high. What dosage are you taking? When I started taking Bromocriptine I had nausea, vomiting, dizziness and head rush when I get up fast. Slowly the side effects decreased as my body got used to the medicine. The levels need to go under 25 to get pregnant. If it is higher one will not get pregnant and even if, it will lead to m/c. My RE said once I get pregnant I need to stop taking the medicine and will be monitored by him during the pregnancy. I read that usually after a pregnancy your hormone levels regularize. I have never been pregnant and no idea on that front.

Somebody else who had a baby after being on Bromocriptine might be the best person to answer you.

I had no side effects on Bromocriptine, I do have a pituitary tumour. I went off of it when I got pregnant but mostly as a precaution (the way my doctor put it is that it has not been proven harmful to the baby but not yet proven safe...) I started getting headaches again at 6mos preg so I was put on a drug that *has* been proven safe (Dostinex/Cabergoline) but the theory was that it would reduce the size of my pituitary (not the tumour). Anyway that is likely irrelevant for you as you don't have a tumour.

When I went on bromocriptine my prolactin levels dropped like a rock; I have a healthy one year old son and I am currently in 2WW for baby #2.

I'd say just deal with the possible side-effects (all within the realm of "discomfort" nothing that will last or be dangerous) and see what happens with your levels.

All the best!
