charting temps

Hello,
I am new to this forum.  I am usually on another forum.
I have been charting my temperature and I am on CD 23.  I got a temperature rise today above my baseline.  My question is, if your temperature rises will you have definetly ovulated?  Or can you get a temperature rise without ovulation?
Yesterday and today I had a good amount of cramping and low back pain and thought for sure I was going to get my period.  I still feel like I am going to get it.  But I was thrown back by the temperature rise.
Thank you for any input.

Thank you so much!!  I get it now (finally).  I think I definetly ovulated.  Medhelp marked that I did because there were 3 days (now 4 I think) in a row of elevated temps.  So I am hoping that that is true ovulation and not an abnormal temperature rise 3-4 days in a row.
I was really thrown off with the back pain and cramping because I never get that.  It was pretty uncomfortable.  I hardly even ever have symptoms that strong when I get my period let alone ovulation.  Maybe it was because of the miscarriage.  Who knows.
Keep your fingers crossed.  I am going to take a test on Wednesday.  I know that's kind of early but that is how early I tested positive last month. I have some $ store tests to start with:)

You can have abnormal temp rises which have nothing to do with ovulation.  Things that would affect a rise unassociated with ovulation would be stress, illness, taking temp an hour late or more, lack of sleep, etc. Also you might want to start looking into cervical mucus checking etc, to back up the temps you are seeing as the temp alone is something where you can see ovulation but more so in hindsight rather then leading up to it. Also I want to stress that the "DIP" most definitely is NOT seen by all women all the time.  Sometimes I see it, sometimes I don't and I'm still ovulating and having a normal chart by all other indications.  It just depends on the timing of ovulation and the timing of the temperature as to whether or not you'd "catch" the dip. However if you are seeing a great deal of cervical mucus similar to an egg white consistency and your temp rises (I would say .4 or more??) above baseline you should use that day assuming you may have ovulated.  Using temps only, ovulation can only be confirmed after 3 temps that are higher by which time you are no longer fertile (egg only live around 24 hours)  Your best bet would be to take temps in hopes of catching the dip, or using the first day of temperature rise, but use that together with keeping track of your cervical mucus.  Once that is plentiful where you are feeling you are wiping more then once etc cause there's a lot there and is an super stretchy egg white consistency (sorry if TMI) you should use every other day or something to raise your chances of conception.  Sperm live for up to 5 days in this type of mucus so it should better your chances a bit. If you are able to get your tracker to public I can try and keep an eye on it to help you distinguish if ovulation has occurred. I think I've replied to your posts before so I apologize if I'm repeating myself!  Good Luck!

Thank you for your info, again!!!!
I have my chart on private.  I should figure out how to set it onto public.  I am terrible with figuring these things out.  Not to computer savvy...
I actually miscarried last month but it was so early that I just like to think of it as a period.  I miscarried on CD 30.  That is like a normal cycle for me.  I normally get my period anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months apart.  I wouldn't have even known it was a miscarriage if I didn't get such an early positive pregnancy test.
Anyway, While I miscarried my temps were pretty low then they rose but never above my baseline and hovered roughly around the same place.  They would dip and I would think I was ovulating but then then they would go back.  Looking back, I realize they weren't huge dips although at the time I thought they were.  Then I had one big dip 2-3 (?) days before my temp. spiked.
My temp rose 1 more degree today and my cramping isn't as bad so I am feeling very confident.
But I am still a little confused, if my temperature continues to rise, does that definetly signal ovulation?  Or can someone have a temperature rise without ovulating?

It depends on how high the rise is.  If you are ttc I would use the day assuming it has signaled ovulation, but you won't know unless the next 3 or 4 temps at least are noticeably higher then your previous baseline.  Also have you had a shift previously this month? because it is common for your temp to keep going up after ovulation and then drop off right at your period. (some decrease after ovulation if not pregnant but some increase too it just depends) The cramping you describe could be your period, ovulation, or just coincidence.  It's hard to say. Good Luck!

Do you have an ovulation tracker here on MedHelp? If so, it would be easy for us to look at your chart and try to figure out what's going on.
