ladies with pcos * help advice treatments*

i am so in the dark with pcos and thought it would be nice to learn more so i thought we could all chat and discuss treatments what works what dosent and in general the dreaded support for ttc i dont no if it will take of but heres to trying x




So i am seeing a specialist soon as i o on my own i dont think clomid would be the right thing for me what does metaformin actually do??

I just wanted to add a note of hope: someone who works with me has PCOS and was trying for 2 years to conceive with no dice. When she learned that she wasn't ovulating regularly, she was put on, I believe, Femara and, after a few rounds, is pregnant with her first child.

Hi there.  I have pcos as well.  I don't ovulate on my own at all.  I was put on the bcp to regulate my periods.  On the pill I got my period every 28ish days.  I went off the pill and we tried for 6 months to get pregnant, nothing happened.  My GP recomended that I start on Metformin to regulate my cycle which should help me ovulate.  The metformin helps to regulate and get rid of excess insulin in our bodies with pcos.  I lost 25 lbs with little effort, as it greatly curbs appetite.  Being on the metformin got my hormones of FSH and LH back to normal, however my progesterone is still low and I am not ovulating.  I am now on Clomid, starting my second cycle in a few days.  My first month on Cloimd, didn't ovulate and obviously am not pregnant.  I will try the 3 months of Clomid and then see from there.  I am so frustrated with all this as well.  Studies have shown that women with pcos respond well with metformin and clomid, but of course each women is different.  There is lots of great info out there on pcos and metformin.  Best wishes,

Thanks for tha i am confused as i ovulate i got a pale + today so happy but i have got a + everytime so i dont no what will work for me i am going to a specialist soon i can not wait to get thigs moving it is doing my head in now
i hope you get ansews soon this is why i think this thread would be good for women like us who are getting no were and all the advice we can get is important i hope something works for me i am so fed up .....:( x

Hi Hannah-- I'm 35 and learned I had PCO last year although I suspected it longer.  I can pass along a few pointers and my personal experience...

First, my RE says OPKs aren't great for POC women and following your CM is a much better way to track.  

If it's any hope, I got a BFP on my first un-medicated IUI last year.  PCO women have a higher chance of m/c and I fell into that group so we tried clomid and femara next-- got 1 good follie each time and my cycle was ~30 days on the meds.  When we moved on to follistim, I swung the other way and completely over responded -- I had to do IVF to clear out all the fluid that comes with 39 follies.  I just found out that my FET seems to have worked.  This time, I'm pushing my RE to watch my progesterone closely and I'm taking 1/2 tablet of metformin 3x/day -- I don't have high blood sugar but she wants to be careful.

So the net of it is, don't get discouraged.  With the right Dr. I can't imagine you'll have too much trouble.  I would highly, highly recommend watching your weight and slightly increasing protein while decreasing or eliminating simple carbs (sugars, etc).  I've read that PCO women's bodies function best at the lower end of the BMI range.

hey thanks so much my weight is stable i am a perfect bmi but i am going to get to the lower of that as i heard it is a good thing i am at secialist soon can not wait and opk always worked for me in time with cm :s i suposse everyone is different x

Hey, I have a friend who happens to be named hannah, she has pcos and ovulated on her own everymonth.. her doc put her on metformin and clomid, the first month she didn't ovulate however the second month she did ovulate and she is now 7 weeks preg! Good luck i hope it works!

I also have PCOS and have been on metformin for well over a year now. It took quite a lot of getting used to but my body has adjusted to it now. For me, the metformin did help me to actually be able to lose weight. Before I could work out and nothing would happen. I took the metformin and was too afraid to try for fear that I would not lose any weight. Back in February I was diagnosed with endometriosis and we decided we needed to try to have some babies now before it becomes too late. When we went to the fertility doctor the nurse said she could tell that I take metformin and take it regularly. She said that if I did not take it then they would be able to see a ring around the ovary. But the cysts are very, very small and under control and not contributing to any fertility problems in my body because I am on this medicine. Also, since going to the fertility doctor and actually trying to lose weight the old fashion way of restricting calories and exercising I've lost 20 pounds in 3 months which they said would help with the fertility. It's slow going but at least it's in the right direction. My biggest misconcept about the metformin when I began taking it was that it had to do with my blood sugar. From what I understand now it does have to do with blood sugar but it doesn't. I had quit eating all sugar period once I was diagnosed with PCOS and once I got on this medicine and that was causing my sugar to go too low. But the doctor did say that was a rare side effect and that most people don't have that problem with metformin so hopefully you won't. Now I'm just low sugar and low calorie and watching what I eat. The nurse that was assigned to me at the fertility clinic said that I can't tell how the metformin is working based on the blood sugar. I can't remember exactly how she explained it but the bottom line was that I really didn't realize how much it was working just based on how I was feeling or the side effects. The proof was on the ultrasound. I just had an iui and am now in the two week wait to see if I'll get pregnant or not. I do believe that the metformin has helped tremendously. If you have a great doctor who is recommending the metformin I would go for it. It took me about two months to get used to the stuff but I just kind of gradually upped the dose. I hope that the side effects aren't too bad for you. Best of luck!!!!!

I just wanted to clarify that the metformin did help but that I also had to take clomid for 5 days at 50 mg and a shot of Ovidrel to get me to ovulate.

i dont no what i will be taking at the moment or what the docs in ul are like have an apt on 12th hoping to find out more then what dpo are you i dont no when i od had faint opk lines for 3days now so dont no :S
