Definitely deserves it own thread! I went to the original article and saw the pics from the u/s where it showed 2 follies: one with good blood flow, the other w/none! Wow! Who'd have thought that was possible? Still digesting everything I read and just told my OH about it. I'm also going to do some more googling on the subject. Thanks again!

EXCERPT: The difficult part about determining what makes an egg good or bad is that it takes a long time for an egg to mature— about 110 days— and the place it develops, an egg follicle in a woman's ovary, is not an easy place to conduct scientific studies. Researchers are sure, however, that the last 24-48 hours of development, just before ovulation, is the most critical period of development, when chromosomal abnormalities are most likely to occur.

This image from a colored Doppler Ultrasound shows two adjacent follicles that were indistinguishable by conventional ultrasound, but when the color-pulsed Doppler ultrasonography was applied, the one of the left (A) showed high blood flow, and the one on the right (B) had virtually non-detectable flow. Numerous studies have shown that the the most competent eggs from follicles like the one on the left.
image: Jonathan Van Blerkom
"I think the more pressing concern now is: Could there be insults imposed on the ovary and the development of [the egg] at even earlier times in its development?" says Albertini. "If it takes approximately 100 days to design, build and ensure that [the egg] is going to inherit all the necessary materials that will support embryonic and fetal development, then what impact might there be in not one or two, but even three menstrual cycles before that ovum would actually be released from that ovary?"
In other words, do women who want to try to conceive today need to worry about what they were doing, eating or drinking three months ago? Both scientists say there have been no studies done that can shed light on this just yet. Van Blerkom's research has shown that eggs that develop in a follicle that has a plentiful blood supply tend to do much better than eggs from follicles that do not get much blood. But he says blood flow in the ovary is fickle: "Even two follicles that are adjacent to one another on the same ovary, right next to one another, can have completely different biological characteristics…and very different blood flows." And how to control or alter the course of vascular development in the ovary is, for now, beyond the grasp of science.

So is there anything a woman can do to help her eggs develop properly in the three months before ovulation? Science doesn't have an answer for that yet either. But Albertini says playing it safe probably can't hurt: "I think some caution in terms of a healthy diet, limiting drug exposure, alcohol exposure, etcetera, until we understand more about this process, would be recommended at this point."

My re said that egg quality is unknown until your body or the shot he gives me triggers release. I think the DNA is not formed until then.

He kind of let this info out casually when he was saying that "no one knows a good egg until after ovulation and no one can tell you that a fertilized embryo is good until day 5 when the DNA from spe and egg have had time to mingle and build the DNA chain" until then it is a lucky guess. Good looking embryos on day 3 could be trisomy or anueploid. And ones that look a little wonky could be perfect chromosomes.

This is why I have to take baby aspirin and folic acid every day - MTHFR thing - it needs to be in my system at ovulation not just after a BFP

if you google "egg quality is determined at ovulation" a link from some fertlity specialist should come up. I'm on my phone but if I find it I will post to your wall.

I asked my dr the same thing about speeding up menopause by dropping so many eggs at once. He said we have more eggs than we will ever use, so that was reassuring...
usuk--what do you mean "egg quality is not determined until your body or the shots trigger you?"  The egg's quality is determined before you have an lh surge right?  The trigger just makes it pop out of the follicle...or am I wrong about that?

egg quality is not determined until your body or the shots "trigger" you. which is 24-48 hours before the egg releases. that's why it varies and why you take prenatals, etc before you get preg. they hep with egg quality.

MEL4141: did your doc tell you that the years you did not ovulate will help in the long run? just curious cause mine said no????

and he also said that doing treatments now will not speed up menopause just because i drop more than one egg at a time.

thanks for your comments but my doctor and gyny are more pleased with my 10.2 fsh than the 2, for me the newer level is better, it wasnt on the day when you should test as I had another one done 2 weeks ago and was 4.2 ad that was ok too.I have had eating probs for years but because i havnt menstruated for along time all my levels are way out of sink, infact my ovarian reserve is good because its been dormant for so long.Anyway we have another battle of ivf to deal with and praying not a miscrrige again, best wishes for you, melissaxx

Mine went from 8.9 (where it had been for like a year) to 11.7. I'm upset b/c we were going to do IVF in June (when my FSH was 8.9) but my husband's best friend was getting married in Maui and the dr said to go ahead and go, nothing would change in a month or two. He was wrong!
So instead of IVF, we tried on our own and I had a chemical pregnancy.  I didn't get my levels tested right after b/c we were in Maui. This was my first blood draw since the miscarriage. At my RE, anything under 15 is ok (obviously under 10 is better). I'm just worried they are going to keep climbing.
So, you were able to get pregnant w/ a high FSH?

I am SO glad you asked that because I was wondering exactly the same thing! It happened to me this month! I m/c'd in April. Didn't pass the tissue until 7/2. The FSH from 7/5 was 27 points higher than the one in January (which was also really high). Was yours really high after a m/c? Or just a little higher?

my fsh level is 4.5 and doctor says it should be below 6 and that is excellent . any thing 6 through 9 is good. and 9 and 10 are fair.. anything over 10 is bad egg reserve......... that is on cycle day 3........ I hope this helps.....2.0 is a great fsh level to have that means your eggs are good but 10 is not good. i am going to put a link in this too..

Hello, i am not sure if its correct but i too had a miscarriage early may and when I had my bloods done again 3 weeks later my fsh was 10.2! its a good level for me because my level was always so low only 2.0 if that. so it maybe to do with the miscarriage. we're hopefuuly about to strat ivf 2 in 2 weeks time once this damn cyst has gone caused by clomid, not a fan of that stuff, best wishes with your progress melisaxx
