pap smear and closed cervix

How is it possible to have taken a pap smear if the cervix is closed?   Results being abnormal and to be reexamined to hear that the cervix is closed.   What is the reason for the closure? It is necessary to have outpatient procedure done to open the cervix to perform cell scrapings?

Yes, an abnormal pap test was reported.  Dr. said she could not obtain the biopsy because uterus was closed. I am sure she meant the cervix opening into the uterus?

The only time they don't like to do a pap is when you are menstrating. The cells are scraped from the outside of the cervix. Not from the canal between the cervix and the uterus. I have never heard of having the cerix dialated to perform a pap smear. I have been having annual paps since I was 15 (now 43). The only time I was dialated was for a d&c.

Did you have an abnormal pap and they request a biopsy?
