period and pregnant?

Can you have your period and still be pregnant? That was a stupid question because you can. My mom's friend was pregnant with twins and she was still getting her period.. But how is that possible I thought once you get pregnant your period is supposed to stop because the egg is fertalized ?

I actually had bleeding and was told it was my period (after I found out 3 months later that I was pregnant). I had it for a very short time and it was very light and spotty. I was told it would not be heavy at all if you were pregnant. I had it one time right after I apparently conceived.  I didn't know I was pregnant because of that issue and the fact I was told I probably could never get pregnant and I was all stressed out due to my relationship at the time.
