Clomid no Ovulation?

Clomid no Ovulation?

My husband had sperm tested, both times same result.
Volume 4.1ml
Concentration 20.8 million
Sperm count 85.3 million
Motility is low:  19% progressive, 13% non-progressive and 68% immotile.

He is a big drinker and an occasional smoker and he waited 7 days with no ejaculation before the test.  Is it possible that he waited too long and therefore most of his sperm were immotile or dead?  If he cuts way back on drinking and smoking will his motility count change?  How long should he wait to get tested again.

Dear Saskatoon-

You ask some good questions. While there are no guarantees, my clincial experience is that cutting back on excessive drinking most often results in large improvements in sperm count. Beyond the bad effects of both excessive drinking and any amount of smoking on overall health, occasional smoking probably is not affecting his count nearly as much as excessive alcohol. Since the sperm that your husband starts producing today will not be mature and ready to be ejaculated for another 70-75 days, it takes around three months to see an improvement, so I would repeat the sperm count around Labour Day if he cuts back on drinking now. Waiting 7 days before providing the specimen may have played a small role, but does not account for 68% immotile and a borderline normal count.

Motility of sperm is highly affected by smoking.  Smoking thickens semen, and makes the sperm work much harder to get through it....
Drinking slows them down, but they should return to a normal state when the alcohol is metabolized.  Not releasing sperm for 7 days should not make it die, it will only build up, and provide more strong sperm.

My husband smokes full time, and when I was on Clomid for 6 months and didn't get pg, I blamed him....very much...I was angry.  He also drinks his fair share.

Since I got off clomid, and quit 'trying', I have been pregnant 4 times in 5 years.
One of the pregnancies ended in m/c, but I am in my mid thirties.
