Extremely High Betas with Singleton, DOWNS???

Extremely High Betas with Singleton, DOWNS???

Hi I am currently 8 weeks pg from a FET with singleton. My betas are:

11dp3t: 323
13dp3t: 859

The eggs were retrieved when I was 35.8. We got 12 eggs/12 embies and put back 9 in 3 transfers. Got pg at last FET with grade B embies.  My IF is tubal.  Some lady post on-line saying that high betas with singleton are indicative of DOWNS???  I am so worried.

Untrue. There is a VERY WEAK association between high beta HCG levels and Downs. Having said that, the vast majority of high beta levels are NOT indicative of Downs. Also, your beta levels as you describe them are not that high.

There are several ways of screening for birth defects. Examples include:

1) amniocentesis
2) chorionic villous sampling
3) combination first trimester screening/second trimester screening involving an ultrasound and blood tests at 10-12 weeks and more blood tests in the second trimester
4) second trimester blood testing

To give you an idea of where HCG fits in, it is only one component of many subtances analyzed in combination first trimester/second trimester combination testing, or second trimester testing and is not at all accurrate enough on its own.

My feeling is that things look good for you, you should base your decision on birth defect testing based on what you would want to have done if you had conceived on your own. The decision for testing is a bit complex, and you should discuss with your Ob provider.

Congratulations!

Thanks so much Doctor.  Today I feel much, much better.

Yeah, I should feel confidence, but not to worry all the time for different things.  Thanks again and have a great day.

Hey how are you doing?  I saw you posts on this board.  What a "pleasant suprise!"  I wish I am that lucky. I went in at 7 weeks for U/S, just one baby.  Now I am waiting for my 2nd U/S which will be 91/2 weeks.  I am nevous.  Hopefully everything is going smoothly.  God bless us!
