Late ovulation and prenatals

Late ovulation and prenatals

Hello,

I take Clomid on cycle days 3-7.  I was put on it because after my miscarriage in January, I tried for 6 months without getting pregnant again, so my doctor wanted to speed things along. For the last three months I have ovulated like clockwork on cycle day 16, but this month I did not ovulate until cycle day 23, an ultrasound and trigger shot were given so I know that my follicle was mature at the point of ovulation. Does this week delay in ovulation signify that there is something wrong with my egg this cycle, diminishing my chances for sucess this time? I had a post coital that showed live sperm, so I just did timed intercourse, no IUI.

Also,  I have been put on Prenate DHA vitamins. I paid $50 for them, but when I got them home I noticed there are only 9 vitamins/minerals whereas my last one had upwards of 30. Plus the prenate has hydrogenated oil in it. It just doesnt seem like this is a good vitamin to me and I was wondering if you know anything about it. Thank you.

Dear Srfoshee-

Let me try to answer some questions for you:

1) I am not worried about the delay in ovulation this month. As long as that happens only occasionally, there is not problem. Also, I do not think it has a negative effect on your egg quality

2) Are you taking clomid because you do not ovulate regularly on your own, or do you have regular periods even when you are not taking clomid. If you need clomid to ovulate regularly, then it probably does not matter a great deal whether or not you do IUI or intercourse. On the other hand, if you ovulate regularly, then I would recommend adding IUI whenever using fertility drugs to give you the best chance at getting pregnant

3) There is absolutely no reason to be spending $50 on 9 prenatal vitamins. Any prenatal vitamin containing at least 0.4 mg folic acid, iron, and other vitamins will do. You should check with your pharmacy. One of the great fallacies with vitamins is that more $$$ equals a better vitamin

4) If clomid is going to work, it usually works within the first three tries, and if you have already been on clomid for 6 tries since the miscarriage, it is time to start considering alternatives.

5) I have not used a post-coital test in years so cannot comment on that. In my opinion there is limited if any purpose to the post-coital test.

6) Is your current provider an infertility subspecialist/reproductive endocrinologist. You may want to consider seeing one if 6 months of clomid have not worked.

Good luck!
