Ovulation symptoms

I had abdominal pains and headaches for about a week, and it gradually disappeared throughout that week (I also used hot water bottles to ease it). I'm just confused as to the timing of all this, do ovulation symptoms arise PRIOR to ovulation, or AS ovulation happens? when I first started experiencing abdominal pains is that because I was ovulating already? when do symptoms really start?

Most women don't have any symptoms at all during ovulation.  But for those that do, usually there is pain for about 24-48 hours as the follicle grows and then ruptures.
Your pain sounds like it may be something more than simple ovulation, and I would strongly suggest giving your doctor a call!
