Prostatitis and Infertility

by bestofhealth, Jan 14, 2008 12:00AM

Dear MD:

I want to present the following data regarding my condition.

1) My wife and I have been trying to conceive a baby for greater than 1 1/2 years now.

2) I have been suffering prostatitis for several years but it has recently become chronic.

3) I have pain and frequent urination. At night especially.

4) 2 sperm analyses revealed normal sperm counf but subnormal motility and morphology.

5) Urologist only prescribed clomid to help testosterone levels(last four months). Levels greatly increased..

7) We havr conceived previously( 3 yrs ago)

I could provide more information.  Oh- there is also diagnosis of a varicocele..

I am contacting you as I really need to lnow how to proceed in the right direction. This issue has had a major impact on lifestyle.   How do I increase the chances of getting my wife pregnant?  Does prostatitis terminally affect fertility or are there other answers for these results?

I am thanking you very much.  Any expert hrlp on my condition would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

bestofhealth

Regardless of the cause of you subnormal motility and morphology, it seems that it has not been corrected by antibiotics or clomid. There are two treatment choices - repair the varicocele (which has in the range of a 50% chance of helping you to achieve pregnancy by improving motility and morphology) or pursing in vitro fertilization with a procedure called ICSI (stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection) where your partner's eggs will be injected with your sperm to insure fertilization.

To try to help you to decide the best approach, I would recommend that you and your wife see a reproductive endocrinologist/infertiliy subspecialist (these doctors are called REIs) but be certain to see one who works closely with a urologist with sub-specialty training in male infertility. This would allow you to be evaluated by a team of experts, and you would get the info you need to make the right choice.

The problems that you and your wife are facing trying to get pregnant are treatable.
