Still trying to get pregnant

by shelzyx, May 10, 2007 12:00AM
I am 30 years old my husband is 33 and we have 5 children together and we are trying for our 6th (7 months trying) to cut a long story short when I was pg with our daughter (pg no 4) my husband had a vasectomy (8 years ago) 4 years later I fell pg with our son, I had no trouble what so ever falling pg always fell pg the 1st month of trying before the vasectomy. I had to have an emergency c section with our last child (4 natural and to term) at 28 wks. I had the depo injection every 3 months until 18months ago. My question is could having a c section be affecting our chances to conceive? Maybe the depo shot? I have all the signs of ovulation and I have a 26 day cycle. My husband did have a sperm analalysis also here are the results
volume 4.5
viscosity normal
motility 67%
progression good
count 15 million/ml
normal morphology 6%
head defects 74%
cytoplasmic defects 2%
abnormal mid piece 33%
tail defects 40%
TZI 1.69
I am not sure if this analysis could be different to the states as we are in Australia.
Our Dr has told us that I could definately fall pg with this sperm analysis. Could you possibly shed some light on what all of this means. Also maybe give me some ideas on what to do next.
We would apreciate it very much I look forward to your reply.
Also my husband is taking some meds to help his sperm do you think he needs to?
Thank you again for your time I realise you must be busy
Kindest regards
Richelle

Dear Richelle -

It may just be that you need a little more time. We define infertility as failure to get pregnant after one year of trying and you are only at the 7 month mark. It is very uncommon for a C-Section to lead to infertility, unless you had an infection after the surgery that might have caused fallopian tube damage which is rare. Your husband's sperm count is not quite normal, but pretty impressive after a vasectomy! A count of 15 million is a little low (normal > 20 million) but not terribly so. Motility is normal. If your sperm lab used a classification system called 'rigid morphology' or 'Krugers morphology,' then a morphology of 6% is fine - using that system normal is > 14%, intermediate is 4%-14%, low is < 4% but the difference between 'normal' and 'intermediate' is so close that I consider 6% morphology to be acceptable. If your sperm lab use WHO criteria, then a morphology of 6% is quite low as normal is 30% in that classification.

My suggestion is to continue to try for another 3-5 months and if you are still not pregnant, visit a fertility doctor and they will be able to take a closer look for you.

Good luck. That's quite a vasectomy story!
