Waiting for a period after a miscarriage

Waiting for a period after a miscarriage

Hello!

On June 10th I had a D&C, I was 12 weeks pregnant.  It has been just about 8 weeks now and I have yet to get a period.  My doctor told me it should come aroung 4-6 weeks.  My recovery from the D & C was fast and seemed to be easy.  However, since then I have had cramping and pms symptoms around when I could possibly be ovulating but no period.  My doctor sent me for an ultrasound to check for an ovarian cyst (she thought she felt one).  It came back fine.  I have been pregnant before and sailed through that pregnancy and labor without any issues except she was a few weeks early.   I just want to know if this is normal or if something else could possibly be going on.  How long should I wait to call my doctor about the delay in my period?  8 weeks seems like  a really long time when you are waiting to get back on track so we can start ttc.  :)  Thank you!

Hi!
I'm sorry for the delay in response--was very ill for awhile

If you were my patient, I would check two tests at eight weeks--
the first would be a pregnancy test--a quantitative beta hcg would be most helpful.
Sometimes there is still some pregnancy hormone from the previous pregnancy, and sometimes there is already a new pregnancy!

The other test (depending upon the hcg levels) would be an ultrasound--which it sounds like you had already. If the ultrasound was normal, I would be inclined to try a prescription for 5 days of Femara or Clomid to "jump start" the cycle.

Eight weeks is still within the realm of normal.  The only real concern would be the possibility of Asherman's syndrome (scarring of the uterus resulting from a d&c).  This is rare, and most likely you have already  sorted out what is going on by now anyway!

Good luck!
