bleeding and spotting during first trimester

Hello,

I am a 41, I have just completed my first IVF and I am 7 weeks pregnant. I have been put on complete bed rest because I have started bleeding and spotting. It started last Monday, I did an ultrasound on Tuesday and I saw my baby's heart beat. The bleeding stopped until last night. It did not last long and I am not spotting now. The bleeding and spotting has been all colours from bright red to dark brown.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with me and is this common in most women?
Thanks,
CJAVVIA

Hi!
I have read your follow up posts too.  Yes, it is common to have bleeding early on, although it is not normal.  In most cases it is caused by a subchorionic hemorrhage.
In MANY cases the hemorrhage, which is usually between the sac and the uterine wall, heals similarly to a bruise.  Often as the healing occurs there is more bleeding which can be dark red or brownish in color.  If your ultrasounds have been good--with the baby growing and a normal heart rate--you have a very good chance of taking home a baby in a few (very long) months!
Good luck!

CJavvia,

Yes, a lot of the ladies have experienced bleeding. It's good that you have been placed on bedrest. Due to the Holidays, it may take a minute for you to get responses, but the ladies on MH are sooo very helpful & I am sure will post responses soon.

RSSBD to You,

Cjavvia,

I to bleed from 6w2d through to 11w5d.  On and off, more on than off and ranging in colours too.  I was pregnant with twins and did then go on to have the boys at 37weeks.  With mine it was put down to a blood clot that wasn't showing up on the u/s but must have been there cause at 11w2d I had a massive bleed and a clot the size of my closed fist came out, god only knows how???? I did ask how could that get out of my CLOSED cervix!!!!! No real answer.  After that big bleed all bleeding slowed and then stopped.  I thought that I'd lost one if not both the boys, but all was good.  Some good signs that all could still be good......I had NO pain, either in my back or groin/tummy.  My ultrasounds, and I was having them 2-3 times a week were all shoing no shadows behind the placentas and no visiable bleeds in the uterus.

I hope that your result is as good as mine.....bleeding is OK so long as no pain.
