blocked tube

blocked tube

Good morning.  I had an hsg on Wednesday and my OBGYN told me my left tube was blocked, but my right one is okay.  What are the chances of me having a child now and what else can I do?

Also, I read that a blocked tube can be cause for Chlamydia or Pelvic inflamatory disease.  I have not has any of those because I go to the annual test every year and I know it's always a normal exam and always negative for chlamydia.  What else could it be?  I'm only 4'10, could that be part of the reason?

Thanks for your answer, I'm very scared and depressed right now.

Dear Lucia-
I take 'the glass is half full' rather than 'the glass is half empty' approach, and with good scientific reason. Pregnancy rates with infertility treatment when only one fallopian tube is open are almost as good as when both are open. Not only that, but research studies have been carried out where women who had only one tube open at their first HSG went on to have a second HSG and it turned out that on the second HSG both tubes were open 60%-70% of the time. We think that sometimes mucous can clog a tube, and sometimes the HSG test can be wrong simply because dye did not get into one of the tubes. IF your tube was blocked right where it enters the uterus, I would recommend taking the same approach to your infertility treatment as if both tubes were open - there is a better than 60% chance they are both open and even if one is blocked, treatment would be the same as if both are open with no real difference in chances for success. If, on the other hand, the tube was blocked at the far end, then you might want to think more about whether an infection has occurred and think about a laparoscopy to better evaluate your anatomy. Chlamydia is not the only infection that causes tubal blockage. Usually, if an infection is the cause, both tubes are affected. Your height has nothing to do with this.
