cord accident

Hi,
   A week ago I had a 19 week ultrasound and found that the baby had died literally a day or two ago.  We are devastated beyond belief.  We had the CVS testing done at 12 weeks and everything came back normal...the whole pregnancy was normal to this point.  On the ultrasound it showed a white ring around the brain appearing that the brain had swelled...they thought genetic or an infection UNTIL he was born.  Immediately my OBGYN had my husband look at our son and she KNEW the answer...the cord was tightly wrapped around his shoulder and then it moved up to his neck where it was tightly wrapped twice.
   They said that they would "test" the baby but my doc thought that it was pretty obvious what had happened...a complete freak accident.  No one will give me answers until next week and I'm so afraid it's something else.  I want "good news" where they say that this WAS uncommon and the chances of it happening again are so slim.  I already have 1 3year old...have had 2 m/c at 6 weeks then made it to 19 with this one.
What do you think?? Have you heard of this happening and should I try again?? I've heard that I could possibly try within a month or two.

I am sorry to hear about this terrible event. This is really a rare occurrence. I would wait until you have the genetic testing back, and also it is worthwhile testing for a condition called antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Although very unlikely to have been the cause, testing for APS is done with blood tests, and in the unlikely event that APS is present, can be treated with medications. Almost always, there is no explanation for why these things happen....and most of the time trying again leads to a healthy delivery. Take your time to grieve, wait for the results to come back, and most likely it will be OK to try again, with the expectation that things will work out next time.

I wish I could answer your question about commonality with this type of horrible incident to alleviate your fears for the future. It sounds like what your doctor said - a terrible, terrible accident. But I am certainly not a physician. As for trying again, consult with your doctors and the hubby and then do whatever your heart tells you. If it was "just" a horrible accident and everything else was going along smoothly, then you made it to 19 weeks and you have every right to feel as though you can make it through. We all do what we can handle - what is that for you? I applaud your strength and courage with all my soul. You and your husband and clearly heroes for your perseverance and heart.
