Hi there!

I want to say that your level is not all that high. I would say borderline.

I had a cycle day 3 FSH test done when I initially saw a Specialist and it came back at 17.6, at age 36. I did ONE high stim cycle and when we did the baseline u/s, I had 3 antral follicles and was told my ovaries were small.  Turns out I needed lots of Gonal-F to stim, so the whole cycle cost a lot of money, none of which insurance covered except for bloodwork monitering. After a  well-timed Double IUI, the cycle did fail.

However, after we decided to stop assisted measures for conception, we moved on in life and moved to our next goal--- building a new home. A month into the building process, we found out I was pregnant and from the start, I could tell this pregnancy was going to be successful. 9 months of terrible morning sickness (Zofran helped immensely) and then I delivered a very healthy, beautiful baby girl!

Now, at age 39, I wanted to see what a random cycle day 3 FSH test result would be and to my surprise, it came back at 10 !!! My Dr. was happy with that result at my age and basically told me that I'm still in the game and it's still pretty good! FSH bounces around from month to month so I'm sure some ,months may be higher, but if you still have lower #'s at any given time, then I think there's a chance for natural conception! Just don't give up!

To show that even at age 39 and the two FSH results that I had, you can still conceive, I just got pregnant for the third time in March but recently had a miscarriage. I could've let myself get very down, but I didn't. I'm just happy that it happened.

Don't give up!!!  High FSH is no 'phenomenon' or 'disease'. If we were to test most women in their 30's I would guess that many would come back with numbers as high as ours and had we not known, there would be no cause for concern. The thing is that MOST women aren't tested for this unless they seek treatment or are having trouble conceiving for years. I know many people who took years to conceive and they finally did. Now, had they gotten an FSH test, maybe it would've been high (or higher than expected). But you can't let this simple test dictate all your next steps or attitude about conceiving.

Sometimes patience and acceptance brings wonderful things. I wish you the best!!!

If you were anything like me, you were less than happy to see that your fsh was at that level. Who am I kidding, I was freaked. I was certain it meant doom and gloom and that I would never get pregnant. What I have found is that a higher fsh (of which you are barely over the magic 10) means is that the number of your eggs is declining and that you might be slightly harder to stimulate with the medication. Nothing more. Try not to put too much into this number...many doctors are starting to see that fsh isn't as bad as it was once thought.

You should be okay for the ivf cycle. Fsh fluctuates from cycle to cycle, so you may see that it goes down (or up). That is why it gets checked every time you cycle.

My fsh has been as high as 13 (at 34 years old) and as low as 8. I am currently working on my 3rd cycle (after two bfps which ended in mc due to unrelated issues). I do attribute the lowering of my fsh to my acupuncturist and herbs.

I wish you luck!

This is a little bit high, not terribly so, but needs to be taken in context. How old are you? If you are 40 or older, I am more concerned with this value than if you are < age 35 for example. If you need IVF and are under age 38, your chances of getting pregnant with IVF probably are not that much lower then if your FSH was < 10. What is increased a little bit (maybe a 15%-20% risk) is that you will not respond to fertility medicines and your cycle will need to be cancelled for that reason - at a level of 10.4 this probably will not happen. So...if you need IVF for other reasons, this should not discourage you.

As for the question about getting pregnant naturally, an FSH level of 10.4 is less important than how old you are, and how long you have been trying to get pregnant for.

This value should be taken in context in your discussion with your REI.
