poly cystic ovarian syndrom(syndrome)? or somethoing else?

I'm 19 years old and married and, my husband and I right now are at a dead end. It all started when I was 15 and I was VERY active in sports(played for 13 yrs), and I had skipped so I wasn't worried..its now been four years and I haven't had a regular period, I've had doctors tell me that, it MIGHT be pcos.
I have the whole facial hair, weight gain, nauseation, bloating.

I was put on metaformin, in december I had my last menstral on xmass, after that I didn't have one, (I've been off of metaformin for about two months) I'm not PREGNANT.

I've also had an ultra sound down (on the 13th) and the tech thinks she saw what she thinks is visable proof of the pcos..

Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong? Or suggestions is to what I should tell my drs?

Anything will help!

Hi!
If you were my patient, I would consider three possible diagnoses.  The first and most likely is PCOS.  The second would be hypothalamic amenorrhea, and the third would be congenital adrenal hyperplasia. One good test to help to differentiate the three is a
17OH progesterone level.  If elevated, you are more likely to have CAH than PCOS.
With PCOS, your prolactin level might be elevated, fasting glucose might be elevated, testosterone might be elevated.

What to do about the problem depends upon whether  you want a baby or not.  If you don't, oral contraceptives are an excellent treatment.  If you do, you will probably need to take some additional medications to help you ovulate.  Clomid combined with Metformin is an excellent treatment for PCOS.

Hope this helps!
