questions about prolactin levels and trying to get pregnant??

hello Doctor,
i have PCOS and after 4 months of clomid and one failed IUI, we decided it was time to move to injections of gonal f but before i could even start my RE ran some blood work only to find out that my prolactin levels are elevated, i still dont know what that excatly means kind of confused but i was told not to to the injections beacuse the chance of it working are slim to none and that maybe thas the reason why the clomid hasent been working..what can i do now? i want to get pregnant, my RE also mentioned that i might be put on a medication to keep it under control and maybe try clomid again..what do you think i should do? and can this new medication help me? can i take while taking clomid and still try to get pregnant? sorry for all the question im just really worried.
Thank you,
Lisa.

Hi - don't know if you will get this because I know it is a few months old, but I found this while doing  a search. I have not been getting my period since I went off the pill a few months ago. Blood tests just came back with an elevated prolactin level. I was wondering what happened in your case, if you don't mind my asking? Thank you very much, and good luck to you!

Elevated prolactin is present in about 1%-2% of women trying to get pregnant - not that common but not that unusual either. Rarely, a very small, non-cancerous, growth in the pituitary gland called a pituitary adenoma is the cause - this is not dangerous and does not require surgery. Sometimes medication can be the cause. Sometimes prolactin is elevated in PCO patients. The level can be lowered very easily with medication.

Depending on exactly how high the prolactin level is, lowering it with the medication may be all that you need to start having regular periods, but if lowering the prolactin does not return your periods to normal, there is no reason why you cannot take either clomid or the injection medicines.

Also, if the prolactin level is elevated, it is sometimes worthwhile getting an MRI of your pituitary gland to see if there is indeed an adenoma there or not.

Please discuss this further with your RE.
