sperm analysis

hi my husband and I are trying for a baby and after 6 months or so we have had no results. Over these 6 months we have been living apart due to work and only got to see each other every weekend or 2. Now we live together and have been for the last 4 months. We decided to see a doctor in regards to the first sperm test my husband did. The doctor recommended we go along the route of IUI if my hormone tests come back ok.  My husband's first sperm test results were: 57,000,000 /ml, total 250,000,000 - 86% abnormal, 14% normal. Motility was over 24 hours, 1st hour being 29%. The second test after 1 and a half months came back as 78,000,000 /ml, total 347,000,000 - 78% abnormal, 22% normal. Motility again was over 24hrs, 1st hour being 13%. The first test was taken after sexual intercourse and the second at the clinic. Can someone please explain these results as my husband is feeling down and is getting himself into a pickle. Thanks in advance people.

Hi!
Here is a nice site with information about the semen analysis.  This test is not well standardized between labs and different labs test different parameters.  Your best be is to discuss the results with your MD who will be accustomed to this lab.

It does sound like there may be a motility problem.  If so, IUI is one very good option.
Your husband may also wish to consult with a urologist to see if there are any options for improving the sperm quality.  Proxeed is available on the web--it is similar to a nutritional supplement for men, also, in some cases medications may be indicated--men can take clomid too!

Also, if he is concerned that this reflects on his "manhood" ask him if he would consider you less of a woman if you needed to take some medications to help you ovulate.  I hope he would say "NO!".

Good luck!
