stopping progesterone

stopping progesterone

Hi,
I've been going to an RE and am currently 11 1/2 weeks pregnant.  My last appointment with my RE is next Monday which will get me 1 day away from finishing twelve weeks.  Before this pregnancy I've had two miscarriages in a row along with having 1 three year old daughter.  This Friday my RE wants me to stop taking the progesterone in oil shots for good.  I've been taking 1cc of this everyday since the day after my IUI.  With this I've been keeping my progesterone levels anywhere between 25-45.  I know that the placenta is supposed to take over at the end of the first trimester but should I contact my OBGYN (who I'll start going back to after next week) and see if she can keep me on some type of progesterone support?  I'm just nervous that I've gotten this far and I'm worried that stopping the progesterone will cause a second trimester miscarriage.  What do you think that I should do?  I will not be taking progesterone this Saturday or Sunday and Monday I go back to the doc...they will draw blood.  Perhaps that will give me a decent reading for how my progesterone levels look w/out the shots.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

You do not need progesterone anymore. In fact, we probably overtreat with progesterone by going out to 8-10 weeks. There was a study from Denmark several years ago where they compared pregnancy rates in IVF cycles between patients who stopped taking progesterone as soon as they knew they were pregnant, to women who took progesterone until 8 weeks, and there was no difference. The placenta takes over progesterone production between 6-8 weeks, so at 11 1/2 weeks you should be free and clear. At this point, taking a shot of progesterone is somewhat like dumping a pale of water into a bath that is already full. I think your are in good shape at this point. Good luck!
