thyroid hashimoto's hypothyroid

Hi there!
I have hashimoto's thyroiditis. I am on synthroid 50mcg currently. My tsh is about 2.0 right now. I'm a little concerned that may be too high for me to get pregnant. I will be starting my injections in about a week and a half for my first ivf cycle. I have read in a few different books that doctors like to see a tsh level of about 1.0. In your opinion, should I go to my pcp and try and get my tsh lowered to 1.0, or should 2.0 be ok for that? Thanks.

carisa,
that TSH level should be fine for trying to conceive.
the issue is once you conceive.  thyroid hormone circulates in your blood bound to proteins, called thyroid binding globulin and albumin, but only the free thyroid hormone is active.  estrogen, such as occurs during pregnancy, elevates levels of these binding hormones, so once you get pregnant, you should have TSH monitored closely to determine whether the synthroid dose needs to be increased.  taking fertility medications also elevates estrogen, though to a much lesser extent and for a shorter time, so this typically is not a problem during the treatment phase. david

OK, thank you. That makes sense. So I'm assuming once I get pregnant my dose will have to be altered. Thanks.
