Insurance...

Ok, we've been trying to get pregnant for two years. My first pregnancy was an ectopic in October 05 and my last was a miscarriage in May 06. Between October 05 and May 06 I only had two periods, and since the end of May when I had my miscarriage, I've only had two cycles. Right now, I'm on cycle day 90. I've taking tests, and I'm not pregnant. I've talked to my doctor, and he's not concerned at all. I've tried birth control, and that didn't regulate me. He says that he will not put me on any fertility medication until I've gone a year to a year and a half without getting pregnant.  My question is, my husband may be losing his insurance really soon (due to a merge in the company he is with), and I will not be able to afford to keep going to the doctor so much without insurance. Is it wrong of me to feel like my doctor should put me on medication to help me ovulate such as clomid or metformin? Also, should I be able to have some sort of say so in this? I am willing to take whatever risks may come from fertility medications, such as multiple births(my doc was worried about this). Am I able to tell my doctor that I am okay with whatever side effects may come from the medications? These are things I will only be able to afford while I have insurance to help me out.  :( I go to the doctor Monday to find out why I haven't started my period yet and why I am so late.

Go to another doctor...say you've been trying for over a year and a half.  However, most insurance won't cover fertility meds.  But they cover diagnostic work-ups to find out what's causing infertility.

I felt like my dr. wasn't concerned enough about my ovulation problems after I had a m/c last March.  I did really like my dr and he and his staff were great through the m/c but I finally decided to get a second opinion.  My new dr. is awesome!  She immediately knew why I was so concerned, had me start charting my temps (other dr. said no need to do), and every month when I go in for a chart review, she immediately knows the questions I'm going to ask before I even ask them.  So, after saying all that, I would definitely get a second opinion. It's worth it for your peace of mind.

I'm 23 as well! I'll be 24 in July. My husband and I got pregnant accidentally about a year after we got married. We had planned on waiting a few years, but were so excited. Since I miscarried, it's really jump started our desire to have kids. We desperatley want a baby now!

I don't think the doctor has to give you anything you ask for. If they don't think it's necessary, they can say no. That's where asking for a second opinion and seeing someone else comes in. That is your right, and it is very practical for you to be concerned and to receive treatment of some sort! How frustrating for you. You can let your doctor know firmly what you want, but if they decline, go elsewhere..

Thank you for your quick response! I'm 23. I've always been slightly irregular, but since my ectopic 15mos ago, my periods have been crazy.. anywhere from 60 days, up to 90 days now. I really want to have children. My doctor isn't concerned at all. He's more concerned that if he puts me on fertility meds. that I will get pregnant with multiples. This doesn't bother me. We are financially stable enough to support them, and I am very healthy to be able to carry them. Do I have the 'right' so to speak to be able to tell my doctor that I will accept whatever the consequences are, I would like to go on medication to make me ovulate? I do ovulate(seeing as how I have gotten preg. 2times). I just don't want to over-step my limits as a patient. If it is my body, do I have a right to 'demand' that he gives me something to make this right?

Go see a reproductive endocrinologist, or at least a new doctor. I know this isn't exactly the same, but I've had 2 miscarriages and my OB doctor doesn't think it's a big deal and that I don't need any testing, but I disagree. I call an infertility clinic that I know of and they will do testing after 2. They are really great, and my insurance won't cover it but it's only a max of 650$ for a full workup for miscarriages. Something to think about; get a doctor who will actually do something while you still have insurance. Good luck!

how old are you? I don't know of any Dr. that would make you wait 1 1/2 of trying when you are not getting regular periods- i would switch doctors and see a fertility specialist- have they run any tests on you to see why you are not getting your period regularly? You absolutely have a say in this - i would get a new doc immediately- especially if insurance will be an issue- time is of the essence.
