infertility at 45

Hi -
IVF worked for us when i was 40 and we feel so lucky. we would like another, but like the other writer, i'm not prepared to do donor egg. my doctor relayed the stats to me: about 4% chance of having a healthy baby if i get pregnant with IVF, which is not encouraging.  my husband is concerned with how ill all the hormones made me last time, the long term health risks for me, and if we were faced with a termination decision. I'd be willing to try again, but a 4% chance is rather discouraging.  any advice? should i just forget about it and be happy with one? thanks for any help.

Honestly, there's nobody that could tell you which way you should go - you just have to basically follow your heart.  Actually a very wise woman told me this when i was trying to decide whether to try for another baby or not.

If you had a healthy pregnancy at 40, chances are good that you'll also have one at 45 if you're in good health.  I had a wonderful pregnancy at 44 - one thing that helped me is that my ob just treated me like I was any other pregnant woman & not some delicate, fragile thing that was over the hill - LOL.

The odds are terrible for having a successful IVF for women 45+.  In fact 4% seems optimistic when compared to other sites (cdc.gov) but one thing you've got going for you is that you had a successful cycle at 40 which is great.  The only thing is egg quality dropps dramatically at 42++.  I read on the expert forum a post written by the fertility doctor about success on IVF cycles - she said that the most important determining factor is egg quality.

There was a woman at my clinic, age 43, who recently gave birth to triplets via IVF w/her own eggs.  My re said she was completely shocked so you never know.  I wish you all the best in your upcoming decisions - jen
