progesterone shot...

hi, i recieved a progesterone shot 18 days ago to kick start my period which i havent had in now 5 months. my doctor said i havent had a period because i previously used the birth control depo prevera(last shot was in september 2011) i had a very light period in december off and on for six days and nothing since then. about a week and a half ago i thought i was getting ready to start my period. there was brown stuff on the toilet paper wasnt alot and only lasted about two days and i would have cramps right about my uterus where my scar is from my c-section. i went back to the doctor yesterday and he told me if i dont start by sunday to come back in monday so he can run some test. my husband and i are so confused on the matter. whats wrong with me, do i need to be concerned?

thank you. luckily nothing is wrong. my doctor said my depo shot is whats causing me not to ovulate and not having a period. he told me that he could put me on clomid when im ready to start trying for a baby if i still have no period, but so far no period. we are planning on trying for another baby by the end of this year!!! so i guess we will just have to wait and see if my periods come back on their own or if im going to have to use a feritlity drug. i know one thing is for sure... i will never get the depo shot again!!! lol

Basically, what your doctor is trying to do is trick your body into thinking it ovulated by giving you a progesterone shot, and thereby bringing on a period.

In a normal cycle, once you ovulate, your progesterone levels go up and stay up for about two weeks. Then, if you're not pregnant, the levels go down and you start your period. So in other words, you only get your period IF you ovulate. Since you haven't had a period in 5 months, you haven't been ovulating during that time. Of course, you nerve know when your body will start ovulating on its own again; but sometimes, progesterone supplements helps "kick-start" your cycle again.

Getting a progesterone shot is not as common as getting a prescription for provera (a progesterone pill you take for a certain length of time), so that might be something you can ask your doctor about if the shot was not successful.

Best of luck with everything!
