About to start Clomid when do i start ov testing???

by sweetdrda, Dec 02, 2007 04:53PM
I am about to start my first cycle of clomid tommorrow(day 5-9).  I am excited and nervous.  I am not sure when to start my ovulation kit. Does anyone know how many days after the last dose of clomid you typically ovulate?  Should I start my ovulation kit on day 11?  That will let me test until day 17.  But according to my last 2 cycles (32days) I ovulated around day 19.   My periods vary so much I have calculated (14 days back from day 1) that I ovulate anywhere from day 12 to day 19.  I have been tracking my cycle since Dec 2007 and the days of my cycle are as follows: 31, 24, 30, 24, 14, 31, 29, 36, 27, 25, 32, 32.  That is fr. 12/07-11/08. However, in august i used an ov kit during the time i should have ovulated and it tested negative (-). ??? I'm not sure what this all means. So I guess I am going back to my question... When should I start using the ovulation kit and is does it matter which kind,,, aren't they pretty much all the same??? Is name brand better than generic?

Clomid can give you a false positive OPK.  You can start using OPK only 3 days after your last clomid pill.  If you take it 5-9, you should wait until day 12.
See link below for more info on OPKs:

Are they going to monitor you on the clomid (sonos)?  I used an ovulation kit the first month I took clomid and got a false positive on day 12.  They told me the clomid can give you false positives.  If possible I would suggest being monitored so you know exactly when you o.  If not then I would start using the ovulation kit on day 10...it's early but just in case...you never know.

Helen- I think we were posting at the same time.  Yeah...I got a false positive....it's a pain but it's better to be monitored.

So if you have a false positive you didn't actually ovulate?  How do they monitor you? The clomid WILL force you to ovulate for sure though, right?  This is confusing??  So when you get a false (+) did you actually ovulate before it said (+) or after???

I got a false positive on day 12 actually it might have been day 10....I didn't o until day 14.  I called me RE b/c I was worried I was o'ing early and they told me to come in the next day and nothing.  I had 2 follicles (11.5 and 12) I believe.  The P.A. told me that sometimes happens with clomid.  So last month I went in on CD 11.  I took clomid days 5-9.  I o'ed but didn't get pregnant.  Last month I went in on day 11-14 they just monitor your follicles and do bloodwork to determine when you will o.  This month was a whole different story...I took clomid days 3-7.  I went in on CD 10 to be monitored then I went back CD 12 then I went back everyday but one days 12-16.  I took my ovidrel on Thanksgiving and o'ed that Friday.  It's just a lot to have to go there every morning but it's more accurate.

Oh you asked if everyone o's on clomid.  I know that some people need a higher dose if they aren't responding.  I responded well but it thinned out my lining this month.

If you get a negative OPK around day 11-12 then you know that clomid is out of your system.  Also note that clomid can shift ovulation to later in the cycle.  On clomid I did not get positive OPK till cd14-15 although normally I'll get a positive around cd12.

I got a false positive on CD 10...I gave up after that.  My RE's office said if they were monitoring me to not worry about using OPK's.  To be honest it was nice b/c I'm a teacher and taking the OPK's is much too time consuming.  Your not supposed to use your FMU and I couldn't do it at school.  I have good insurance so it covered me going to the RE.  Good luck girls!
