by Jenny5, Dec 16, 2007 04:08PM
Hi girls. Has any of you used heparin shots during pregnancy. My Re is considering them if some tests are not normal. He also put me on baby aspirin.

I have MTHFR and I've heard that's an option although my RE doesn't think it's necessary for me.  I am going to see a genetic counselor next week.  Right now I'm taking Folbic and a baby aspirin a day. When I called to make my appointment with the genetic counselor she said that they will have to look at my blood work more closely to know if I need blood thinners.  I've heard of it working though.  Are you pregnant?  Do you also have MTHFR?

I've had two m/c this year on june and october so my Re is doing some test to see if i have any problem. He is doing chromosomes test for me and my husband and antibodies and Mthfr for me.But that is an option if the mthfr is not normal.

I'm sorry to hear about your m/c's.  I had a m/c in June also.  I have compund heterozygous MTHFR.  So far the only recommendation for me is the baby aspirin and extra vitamins.  I guess I will know more after my appointment with the genetic counselor.  Good luck to you and I hope your tests come back good!

I am heterozygous for MTHFR as well and have had 2 m/c this year.  I am pg again now.  My dr. has me on baby asprin, extra folic acid, and prenatals.  I am taking progesterone too.  So, hopefully this one is successful.  My dr. didn't think shots were necessary either.  Good Luck to you!

I'm sorry to hear abour your m/c's.  Do they think they were due to the MTHFR?
Did you see a genetic counselor?  I haven't but my RE said that he would recommend I see one so I have an appointment next week.

They do not think my m/c were due to MTHFR, but they have me taking the baby asprin and extra folic acid as a precaution.  I do have a 10 yr. old son and did not have any problems at all with that pg.  I haven't seen a genetic counselor, just an RE.  Let me know how things go. Good luck...

Thank you I will...I'm not really sure how much more they could say that I don't already know.  I feel like I'm doing everything I can do.  I'm doing the same thing you are, prenatals, extra vitamin, and a aspirin a day.  How far along are you?

I have factor 5 leiden and have also had two miscarriages. Both times I was supposed to start Lovenox (heparin) once a heartbeat was detected. The first time, I didn't have an u/s until 8 weeks, and although the measurements were on track (8 weeks), there was no heartbeat, so I never started the shots. The second time, I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks, 4 days, which was too early for  heartbeat, then a week later a heartbeat was detected, but I miscarried that same night at home. Didn't have a chance to start Lovenox before it happened. So, I think next time I get pregnant, I'll go see a high-risk doctor right off the bat to see if I can start the shots earlier. The miscarriages might not have anything to do with Factor 5, but I want to at least check with the high-risk doctor if I can start it earlier next time.

I also have compund heterozygous MTHFR and I had 3 miscarriages.  My OB then decided to put me on Heparin and then I got pregnant and everything was perfect with this one :-)  We can't say 100% it was the heparin that saved the pregnancy but I'm so glad I was on it.

Wow, you guys give me hope.  I'm so curious what the genetic counselor is going to say.  I really want to take Heparin when I get preg. again but my dh was saying that you have to be careful with it.  I don't know why I would listen to him...haha,  I guess we'll see.  Right now I'm just trying to get a BFP.  Good luck girls!
