Clomid doesn't work for me. What other options?

by Irina29, Aug 02, 2009 05:59PM
My doctor put me on Clomid 100 mg (day 3-7) for three months. Besides the side effects for me were pretty bad (mood swings, crying for no reason, vision disturbances, ovary pain, back pain) I didn't ovulate until day 21. I used OPK's but no luck in detecting my LH surge. So I phoned the fertility clinic and they did E2 and LH. The same day they called me back and my E2 was very high so I had an ultrasound. I had many big cysts on my ovaries and the doctor told me that Clomid is not working for me. So I am suppose to have protected intercourse for the next 2 weeks and he'll call me back for setting another plan. I read so many success stories about Clomid and I feel very discouraged. Before the treatment I had an HSG and all the blood test for me and my husband, and everything was fine. Unexplained infertility for 1.5 years. I am not sure what could be the reason for my infertility , it might be endo but they didn't do a laparo for me yet. If anyone can tell me what other options do I have if Clomid failed?? So what worked for you ?

I tried clomid as well a couple of years ago, with very similar side effects as you describe. The fertility specialist I am seeing now put me on Letrozole. Letrozole is actually a drug used for women with breast cancer. One of the 'side effects' is that it stimulates ovulation. Of course the dose you take for fertility purposes is much lower compared to taking it for breast cancer. I did a little research on my own and found that Letrozole is actually much safer than clomid. I've been on letrozole for three months now, and I don't have any of the side effect I had with clomid. I have had good and healthy ovulation since I started taking it.

Good luck and baby dust to you!

I used Clomid for 7 cycles and unsucessful..side effect: mood swing, lining getting thin..  Doctor put me on Femara and it's not working either...

This time I got pregnant on my own... no medicines... The only thing i done was laparascopy... a week later i got pregnant... My left tube blocked and doctor went in and flushed it...

Good luck and SSBD to you

after i upgraded from clomid, i went to follistim and then gonal which are injectables. but there is more scanning and bloodwork check ups on them. and they are $$$ if your ins does not cover them. good luck.

Have you been tested for pcos?  I had normal blood work so i was not tested, then after three rounds of clomid with no ovulation my doc did a scan and i am full of cysts.  If you haven't talk to your doc about repeating your bloodwork, now after clomid my labs reflect pcos.  i'm not saying the clomid caused it, it just brought it out.  If that is your problem all you will need is metformin taken with clomid and most women ovulate with the combo.  Also have they done a cd21 progesterone level to see if you are actually ovulating?  I had positive opk's for three cycles but i never ovulated.  Doc said because i have so many small cysts my lh went up, but not enough to ovulate.  I hope this helps and you find something that works soon..

I'm also on Letrozole (Femara).  I got pregnant my 2nd month taking it.  I've just started it up again since that pregnancy was a blighted ovum (nothing to do with the Femara).  It doesn't have the side effects that Clomid does and it also doesn't thin out your uterine lining either.

It's worked wonders for me!

All the best, take care!
