Could I be the next Octomom?

by HelloKitty09, Aug 05, 2009 11:09AM
Hi everybody. I started my first cycle of follestim and I had developed 4 eggs over 17 mm, and 4 more that where between 14-16mm the day before my ovulation induction. Dr called and said to cancel, my estrogen was 1600 and he said the chances of more than having 2 babies is too high, plus the risk of birth defects and cerebral palsy. I would not mind twins, but what is the real chance of ending up like octomom? I was thinking to try to get pregnant still naturally, but the nurse said no sex. What are some of your thoughts? Do all the eggs really ovulate and what’s the chance of them meeting with the sperm? Please help, I am confused.

I wish I could help - I know now that re's really, really discourage multiple births even though large families are popular (Jon & Kate plus 8 is one example).  You could possibly get pregnant w/all the eggs and THEN some could split - you never know and then you'd end up w/a litter of embryos.  I would say that you have a great chance of multiples - & if you do get pregnant w/more than two, most women won't consider doing selective reduction.  I'm sorry your cycle was cancelled - I've gone through that same thing but in reverse and it's such a disappointment!  Hopefully, they'll adjust your dosage amount and this won't happen again - best of luck in the upcoming cycle! - jen

If I were you, I would still try, but it depends on how you feel about possibly getting pregnant with more than two.  Itg depends on how you feel about selective reduction as well.

Thanks everyone, I am very grateful of your support. Selective reduction is not an option for me because of ethical and religious reasons.

That is crazy!  You really responded to the meds!  WOW :)  What do you think your going to do?  How old are you?  I'm curious just because your lil ovaries responded so we.  & what dosage were you on?
That would be tough, I probably would go for it myself, even though it is very likely you would have 2-4 bb's.
Has your hubby had a sperm analysis done?  What is his count?  If its really good, you might want to wait, but if its "ok" or "so so" I's personally go for it.
Keep us posted!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ita17, I am 33 going 34 in October. I started with 75 mil than dropped it to 50 the day before cancelation. We did not get a sperm count recently, but the last time the Dr. checked about a year or so, everything was ok with him. But I realize, things can change. I have also tried to eat very health, juice a bunch of veggies and fruits this month, may be this has something to do also with my turbo response. We decided to be more conservative, from the logical point of view, but my hard says go for it. We used protection, except one time, when we used the pull out technique...lol. That was yesterday. Today I started to spot, don't know if I am staring a new cycle or my body is just confused. I'll keep you guys updated.
