Elevated FSH levels at the age of 25 Need urgent help from GURUS of this forum

by Sil82, May 01, 2008 05:27PM
Hi,
As some of you might already know, I was pregnant this january and unfortunately it ended in a miscarriage at 8 weeks after seeing a heartbeat. Had tests done on the tissue. Pathology report says it is a triploidy.
After 2 months I am here now taking routine tests suggested by my RE. Had day 3 blood work done today to check harmone levels. Estrogen and LH are in range but FSH is 15. Doc said normal would be <= 8. Is this a normal count or is it very abnormal. I am so concerned that I read somewhere elevated FSH meaning ovarian reserve is almost ending. Is that true.

I dont have any children so far. With my condition am I ever going to have one? please suggest. I am very worried.
Thanks a lot in advance.

A FSH of 15 is high at your age, indicating your ovarian reserve might be less than it should be.  I don't think it means you are about to "run out" though, but does mean you should be TTC asap.

However, you were able to get pregnant, so that's a good sign.  Mine was 14 early December and I got pregnant soon after, although m/c too.  I have reduced ovarian reserve, which is basically borderline elevated.

My egg quality is likely compromised though since I'm 40 though.  You should have a better chance of a live birth.

15 is considerably high for your age. I am 42 and mine is 7.2  There are factors other than "diminished reserve" that can drive the # as well. Have you talked to the dr about possible pituatary problems?  FSH can vary from cycle to cycle as well. I'd ask for a repeat test in 2-3 months to see if it was an isolated thing. Don't get stressed out just yet. There's likely something causing the high reading. Maybe even a screw up at the lab.

Thanks for your replies and support. I really appreciate it. Had my HSG done. No issues with that.

I had my Day 3 test done for second cycle in a row. Now the FSH is 8.1. Is it is good sign. I just cant trust these as in one cycle it was 15.6 and now 8.1. Will it vary that much for each cycle???

Yes, it can vary from cycle to cycle.  I also read that once you get a high FSH reading it doesn't matter if next month is better, your ovarian reserve may still be diminished.

But for you, I think they may have just got it wrong the first time!  8.1 is good and sounds appropriate for age 25.  As I recall you have gotten pregnant before, so I bet it was a fluke.

It could have been a lab screw up.  I've had those before.  However, I did research on this and what I found said that you should take your highest FSH level and go with that.

Depending on how focused you are on wanting to have a child and your level of insurance and $$$ available...I would jump right to IVF with PGD (pre genetic diagnostic testing - I think).  That way they can put back only the embryo's that are good and strong and healthy.

That would be my suggestion, although it is a dramatic first step.  You might want to try IUI or some other TTCing methods in the short term, but don't be afraid to take control of you fertility.  Just my opinion.

Thank you so much for your answers. I have a follow up appt with RE on June 12. I have to see what options does he mention.
