Progesterone suppositories

by summerskat75, Sep 06, 2007 07:19PM
Has anyone been prescribed progesterone suppositories?  My Dr put me on them for 12 days after ovulation.  I have read that if you stop them it will cause a miscarriage if you are PG...anyone heard of this?  I am assuming my Dr would not have put me on them if that happens.

I am currently on progesterone pills, not suppositories and if I become pregnant I will have to continue to take them through the first trimester.  I believe this is the case with most people that require additional progesterone.  I'm not sure what your situation is though and I'm not sure if there is much of a difference in suppositories vs. pills.

I was pregnant with twins in january, I lost them though. However, my doc had me on prog. suppositories too and wanted to keep me on them for three months after my beta was positive then he  was going to stop them so I don't know about the miscarriage thing.  I lost my twins before I had to stop the supp.

I was put on prog supp. when I was 4 weeks pregnant and had to take them for 12 weeks.  I am now 21 weeks and everything is going good.  Good luck!

Yes, I was put on the progesterone suppositories and was never diagnosed with a progesterone problem. I don't seem to have too many side effects, but I am worried about it interfering with pg tests.

Right if  you get a positive HPT test keep taking the suppositories!!!  Do not stop if you get a positive pregnancy test!!!!!  They do NOT interfere with pregnancy tests.  But if you are temping your temps will remain high all the while you are taking the suppositories.  And you may not get AF until you stop the supossitories, so you must do a HPT test to tell if you are preggers or not!

I just wanted to add that you should not start the progesterone suppositories until 72 hours (i.e., 3 days) after you get a positive ovulation test; starting immediately after ovulation could interfere with the sperm being able to fertilize the egg.  So if you get a positive ovulation test on Monday morning, start the progesterone on Thursday.  Use the progesterone for 12 days.  The next day, do a pregnancy test.  If it's negative, it's important to not take any more progesterone this cycle, or you will throw off your ovulation for the next cycle.
