Seeing my OB on 5/21 Clomid maybe?

by SueGre, May 13, 2008 05:06PM
We are going for a preconception appointment with my OB on the 21st. I am wondering if based on my age (40) he might put me on a round of Clomid. I don't know a thing about fertility meds and would love to hear from those of you who have experience with them. How common is it to have multiples on Clomid or other fertility meds? Does it make you feel sick at all?

We're in the TWW and I hope I won't have to do any fertility treatments. But, I'm totally open to doing them if he recommends them to us.

Out 3rd wedding anniversary is the 22nd which is also 12dpo. So, maybe???

Hugs,

Sue

OMG, I hope you have a nice anniversary present waiting for you, an early BFP!!!!

I took clomid for 3 months and had no side-effects at all although after my last round I ended up with an ovarian cyst.  It can also decrease your cm so if you do try it use preseed.  I think you should not wait to ask your doc for help since clomid will up your chances.  I hope you don't need it but I would not hesitate to take it.

Good luck!!

Hey girl!!! How have you been? Been missing talking to you lately!

Clomid - no side effects that I noticed. DH noticed I was B****ier (is that a word). But I didn't really notice _ HA go figure! I didn't O at all (PCOS) until I was on 100mg. Then at 150mg - think I had two eggs. Clomid by itself doesn't seem to help me at all. I O but still think my eggs need that extra PUSH from the injectibles. We will see I guess - think I just Oed so maybe my eggs are alllllll that bad!

I think you do need to get into see an RE just because you are older (sorry! couldn't figure out a better way to say that - I LOVE YA THOUGH!!) and you don't need to be wasting any time. I am blunt - sorry - that's just me!! So, my suggestion is to also make an appointment with an RE (sometimes it can take a while to get into a clinic) and that way you are covered, just in case GYNO says "uh, gotta refer you" due to your age. I hope and pray you don't need any of the appts and you are calling the gyno and changing that appt to an OB appt in a couple days!! I am crossing everything for you girl! GIANT HUGS!!!!!!!!

Sue,
I'm happy to hear from you!
I would indeed take a chance with Clomid.I was on it for 3 rounds and it did not work, even though I thing my RE was just trying it for the sake of it since I have tubal problem and IVF works better.
I had mood swing on Clomid but nothing too bad.
I really hope you will not need (BFP on your anniversary would be AWESOME!) it but if you go for it we are here for you!

Thanks, girls, you're the best! I hope I don't need to take anything, but will do what is recommended. A + FRER would be the best anniversary present I could ever imagine! I got a very visible + on 12 dpo last time, so I know I could get one again!

Actually that is exciting! If you do have to take clomid, it's really not bad at all. I experienced hot flashes, but it was actually quite hilarious, I'm talking overheating, just out of no where!! However, if your re ever says the word "metformin" to you-run for your life!! It is an awful pill.
Good luck Sue :-)

Thanks for telling me about Metformin. If it comes up, I will run for the hills! Are you still on Clomid? Can I get it from my OB, or do I have to get it from an RE?

To: Sue
Shoot, I'm not sure about that. You'd think you could get it from your ob, especially if the patient does not already have an existing re you know? I sure hope you can!
No, I'm not on clomid anymore. OR METFORMIN-that awful thing!

How long were you on Clomid? Why did you stop taking it?

by candie429, May 13, 2008 07:49PM
Hi Sue.  Just wanted to let you know that I was on both Clomid and Femara.  With the Clomid, I got really bad hot flashes and gained a few pounds.  On the Femara, I felt a lot better and just seemed to get headaches once in a while and a little more sleepy.  I have unexplained infertility, so I was given these just to increase our chances.  I took the Clomid for 4 months and then the Femara for 4 months.  I did ovulate, so both did what they were supposed to, there just must be another glitch that we're missing.  I think the Clomid tends to produce more follicles, but it can decrease your CM and thin your lining, so I think that's why some people prefer the Femara these days.  Anyway, I guess my point is that if they do prescribe one of these, they aren't so bad and they seem to help a lot of people.

By the way, Happy Anniversary!  Ours is the 22nd too!  I'm in my 2ww as well, so I just keep hoping that we'll get the best present ever.  I hope you do too!

I did not take clomid, BUT.. My regular ob/gyn prescribed gonal F for me, which is injectables, so I am sure a regular OB can prescribe clomid, and tina takes clomid and I think she sees a regular Ob/GYN, please dont get discouraged, it has to happen right?? I wish you all the best and your in my prayers.

Have they checked your FSH yet Sue? Clomid raises it, so sometimes they do not rx it for that reason. I don't think Femara is as hard on the FSH. You may want to ask about it as well.  I did 5 rounds of Clomid, taking a break here and there. I did get hot flashes, but nothing I couldn't handle. However, I got a nasty fat cyst that screwed up my cycle for 3 months. It was a lu-lu. It's gone now, but if they gove you Clomid, make sure they monitor with u/s. Those darn cysts can be a pia! I am praying hard for you that the bfp post is coming soon!!! I don't get much time on the forum lately with the new job and all. But, I need to get back and catch up with you. Still hoping to make that coastal trip up to Mass!

The chances for multples is slightly higher but not extremely high. Clomid's job is to make mutliple follicles and grow them, so for example, I had 8 follicles total and 3 of them were mature. One was very mature. So technically I could have had anywhere from 1-3 babies. It looks like I only have one growing, which is fine.

Some women do not tolerate Clomid well at all. I was very lucky. I would say on and off heightened PMS. The worse effect was a week during ovulation time I felt so bloated and ovaries were very, very sore. If you ever had a cyst before, that's what it feels like. It's not excrutiating, but sore. We did Clomid + ovidrel trigger (makes the egg come out) and then an IUI. The 2nd time worked.

If I were you, I would ask to be monitored during your cycle. Sometimes they don't monitor the egg size, count, etc. That's what they did the first time. I insisted on monitoring the 2nd time. Plus they can measure your lining. Clomid does thin the lining in some people .Again, I was lucky.

Good luck. It's really not that bad compared to true IVF preparation (shots everyday, etc).

Oh and I took clomid on day 3-7 of my cycle. Some take it on day 5 I believe. Good luck.

I had my FSH tested last year and it was good. I didn't know taking Clomid was so involved. I will see what the OB says and will go from there, I guess.

Hi Sue,
I took femara instead of clomid.  They monitored my follicles by ultrasound and then gave me an hcg trigger when the follicle was the right size.  It worked on our first try and now I have a precious perfectly healthy baby girl.  Femara has fewer chances of multiples but it also does not thin the uterine lining like clomid can.  it is worth it to investigate it.  (It does cause birth defects if you take it if you are already pregnant so be sure they do an ultrasound to verify that you are not pregnant)
p.s.  I also took baby aspirin, extra folic acid and progesterone once I ovulated.  best of luck!!!!
